Will the Spurs have enough cap room next summer to retain Devin and bring in Scola? The mid level exception should be at least $5 million next summer so maybe split it 50-50 or $3 for Devin and $2 for Scola?

I don't think either, certainly not Devin-of-Nov-04, will be available for those numbers.

I have forgotten that Devin will be an Early Bird free agent so the Spurs can pay him up to the NBA average salary.

    Problem solved.

The way Dev is playing at the moment, Holt would cop alot of backlash if he didn't pay him.

Devin brings excitement (ala SJax) but Dev has his head screwed on alot more tightly, and is a local boy.

He's a solid swing role player, no doubt about it. It's nice to have guys who can come off the bench and put up points, especially for the 13 minutes per game when Duncan is resting.

Money talks, Devin walks, for a lot more money than the Spurs would probably be willing to pay if he plays the whole season like he is playing November, which makes him very attractive as starting swingman on a lot of other teams.

Somebody please say I'm wrong, I really want to be wrong.

The Spurs have their starting lineup locked up until 2007, with Bowen's contract the one that could expire then (there's a team option for the 2007-08 season).

If Devin continues to play at this level it's not hard to envision him breaking into the starting lineup.

Even if you project him to continue to come off the bench, then he's worth keeping around. Think of it like this, you have a solid power forward/center reserve in Malik, you have a very good reserve point guard in Beno. For a classic NBA 8 man rotation you need a quality reserve swingman. Devin would be the last piece to the puzzle for the next 3 seasons.

I heard tp say he would take less to play on a contender not him

    he likes it there

but what is the diffence between 66-88 million

you can not spend that much

brown will not make 66 so I would not hold it against him to leave
the most he will get would be the full mle for 3-4 years

I don't see any team throwing more than $12 to 15 mil at him next summer and that is assuming he continues to blow up. There are more than enough guys who can score in the league at the swing spots. He'll get paid though. Deservedly so.

It's the Devin Browns of the NBA that make the league still worth following.

They have Devin's Early Bird's Rights. They don't have to use the MLE to sign him. They can sign him for anything up to league's average salary.

Someone translate what this would be in salary terms please this year - my guess is about 5.5 million (could be way off, but is a guess)?

Right now Id say Devin would get 4 years 12 million.

The same deal offered to Stephen Jackson.

I think there is still some that wonder if he is a consistent enough player to warrant a big contract.

    More like 3 years/$12 mil.

The average NBA salary should be between $5 to 6 mil next summer.

It really depends on the next CBA. I see Devin getting Bowen type of money.

With regard to the Scola part of the equation, I don't see Scola signing for anything less than what his buddy, Andres Nocioni pulled from the Bulls - a reported 3 year, $10M deal (perhaps buyout thrown in there, not clear).

Perhaps the Spurs can sign both Scola and Javtokas for the MLE combined.

I've heard Devin wants to stay here no matter what, but I think the Spurs will take care of him next summer.
