...with each of them wearing Joey Crawford's #.
Game #3. The only game the Cavs might win.
Just wanted to call it early.
...with each of them wearing Joey Crawford's #.
I don't even know if this trio could slow the Spurs down unless they foul Duncan and Parker out in the first quarter.
We will get screwed 1 or 2 games. Lebron has to look good sometime in this series.
they will definitely call Varejao's flops in Cleveland.
it's been mentioned but Varejao spent more time on his back than a $10 .
In one of the articles posted this week it was mentioned that one of the refs more susceptible to the will of the home crowd will more than likely see game 3.
With the disparity in talent between the two teams any sort of ref manipulation will be more than obvious. The Spurs will have to have a horrible game while the cavs will have to play out of this world for the refs to affect this game in subtle ways. I don't see that happening.
Bavetta and Crawford hated each other.
I understand the spirit of the thread, but to be serious about the issue for a moment, some of the officiating stuff for the Finals is coming into focus.
We know that Javie, Callahan, and Mauer are 3 of the 12 who will call Finals games.
We can be fairly certain that Bavetta, Ed Rush, Danny Crawford, Bennett Salvatore, Bob Delaney, Bernie Fryer, and Joe Derosa are also calling Finals games.
I'd expect that the other 3 Finals officials will be Ron Garretson and Jack Nies, but I could see that the league might elevate some new blood into this round, too (my guesses would be Tom Washington and/or Greg Willard).
With that said, I think you can make some educated guesses about who will call which games by working backwards.
My guess would be that the Game 7 crew would be Bavetta, Rush, and Danny Crawford. That probably means that two of those guys will work Game 4 and the other will work Game 3. (Game 7's are officiated, traditionally, by officials who work Games 3 and 4)
The Game 6 officials would be the league's next best/most experienced crew -- I'm guessing Delaney, Salvatore, and Fryer. That should mean that those 3 officials will be broken up over Games 2 and 3. (Game 6's are officiated, traditionally, by officials who work Games 2 and 3).
I'd expect that last night's officials will call Game 5 -- the only possible change might be that one of the Game 2 officials might replace Ken Mauer for a Game 5. (Game 5's are officiated, traditionally, by officials who work Games 1 and 2).
Given that, the notion of Bavetta and Salvatore doing Game 3 is very, very realistic, I think. Nies would be an understandable add-in at that point, too.
I hate the talk of who the officials are. I think its flat out ridiculous to talk about these guys having agendas or the NBA fixiing games for marketing etc etc. It doesn't happen.
If you want to complain about some of the leagues worst officials who miss calls left and right, thats one thing, but none of the horrible officials are around any longer so thats not relevent.
I agree with you, Manny. I watch the officials mostly because I'm intrigued by understanding who the league thinks are its best officials and by understanding why the league has reached those conclusions. By studying that, I've learned an awful lot about how the game is called -- all of which leads me to conclude that the officials largely do a fantastic job of calling games, particularly at this level of the playoffs.
This thread was more in jest. I really like your officiating analysis FWD for a lot of the reasons you mention above. You almost have it down to a science.![]()
I know exactly what you're talking about 50cent. I just thought it was a worthwhile time to jump in with some of my assumptions for the Finals.
For whatever its worth, Chris Sheridan said in a chat today that he's heard that Bavetta is headed to SA for Game 2. That would be remarkable to me, because it would mean that Bavetta would be highly unlikely to get a Game 7 this year, if such a game were to occur. I had assumed that Bavetta would be the league's #1 official -- the likely crew chief for a Game 7. If Bavetta does call Game 2, I'm really curious about who becomes the likely 3rd for a Game 7 (I'd guess it would be Crawford, Rush, and Delaney) -- though I certainly hope we don't have to find out and are celebrating a championship by two weeks from yesterday!!
Lebron is gonna have a great game 3. No doubt.
Bavetta in game 2. Damn, here comes the Lebron parade to the FT line.
But I thought we had Mr. Favors The Road Team last night, the guy who singlehandedly rewarded Manu's flops in Utah and gave the Spurs a game they didn't deserve. If the Spurs could win that game going away, how on earth are the officials going to be able to give any games to the Cavs unless the Spurs up and start doing stupid and not making shots?
Ah - the three stooges.![]()
