Had Gregg Popovich not already been gray when Manu Ginobili became a Spur in 2002, Ginobili's unorthodox approach to the game would have transformed his coach's hair, according to Cavaliers coach Mike Brown.
Had Brown not already shaved all the hair off his head, the four-point play Ginobili completed with 2:24 remaining in the Spurs' 103-92 victory over the Cavaliers in Game 2 of the NBA Finals might have made it all fall out.
An assistant coach under Popovich during Ginobili's rookie season, Brown recalled before Sunday's game at the AT&T Center how difficult it was for Popovich to allow Ginobili to do what Brown called "all types of crazy things" on the court.
Brown was just a few feet away from Ginobili when the Spurs guard nailed a big 3-point shot and lured Cavs rookie Daniel Gibson into just enough contact to draw a foul. The resulting free throw by Ginobili made eased the Spurs' lead from eight points to 12, blunting the Cavs' fourth-quarter momentum and quelling a rally that, just moments before, had threatened to become one of the most dramatic in Finals history.
"I was feeling good with my shot," said Ginobili, who made 4 of 6 3-pointers and scored 25 points on just 11 shots. "So when I saw the rotation a little late, I didn't hesitate. He jumped into me, but I had time enough to finish the shot. So, of course, it was a big play and I was very, very happy for it."
Brown and the Cavs were deflated by it.
Nevertheless, Brown said he grudgingly admired how Ginobili had duped Gibson into committing a foul that would have given him three free throws had he missed the shot.
"That was a heck of a shot," Brown said. "He's a tremendous player, but he tricked our young fellow. When he shot the ball — you go back and watch the tape — he's leaning to the right, right into him, because 'Boobie' (Gibson) jumped to the side of him. Sometimes a guy like that is able to trick officials and young guys because he's been around the game for such a long time."![]()
Ginobili's shot was one of the biggest of the fourth quarter for the Spurs, who were outscored 30-14 in the period after leading by 27 when it began.
"It was really disappointing," Ginobili said. "We played such a great game for three quarters that seeing the team kind of stop in the fourth quarter was irresponsible."
There was plenty of blame to be shared for the Spurs' fourth-quarter collapse, and Popovich assumed some of it for what he called his poor subs ution pattern and some bad defensive calls.
Ginobili had a turnover that contributed to the Cavaliers' run, but agreed that nobody was free from blame, including Popovich.
"We kind of changed the (defensive) strategy, and it didn't work." Ginobili said. "He's responsible as much as we are, of course. We are on the court, and we didn't execute well, either. We all made mistakes down the stretch, and, hopefully, we all learned from them. He is one of us, and sometimes he makes mistakes and has to learn, too.
"We've really got to learn from that, and we've got to finish the games. We can't allow them to make a 21-point break. We were up 27 going into the fourth, and they make it six. That's way too much."
sucks to be rookie in the finals
boobie was turned into an itty bitty ty![]()
i dont think he's complaining as much as the fact that players always try to draw fouls while shooting and gibson took the bait
Mike Brown, looked like he wanted Pop's help
Ginobli sometimes exagerates contact to draw fouls! Stop the presses!
Suns fan agrees with whining about refs?
shocker.
Suprised Brown went that way.
Watching the tape again, Ginobili goes straight up and Gibson is out of control and just barrels into him.
but facts won't matter, im sure the troll sun and other fans will come in here pointing SEE SEE SEE!!!
Sounds to me like he is giving Manu props not ing about the refs.
That's not crying about the refs, it's just acknowledging that Ginobili baited Gibson into the foul. Because he did. And it worked.
Eh, I still think Brown was trying to discount Ginobili's play a little bit, as if it was questionable. Not on the "tricking Gibson" part. But saying Ginobili "Tricked the ref". No he didn't. It was a legitmate play, with legitimate contact.
Ginobili's just smart. And Brown tried to downplay it as Ginobili creating the contact all by himself as if Gibson was intentionally avoiding Ginobili the whole time.![]()
Don't give Brown the benefit of the doubt. It seemed to me in the presser like he was shying away from giving Gino full credit for the dagger.
You don't even have to rewatch the tape, Gibson jumped into him, Brown's just being an idiot about it.
What that quote doesn't show is how Brown continues by praising Ginobili. Listening to him, it didn't come across as anything close to an insult. He was just explaining what happened.
And Spurs fans who don't think Manu drew that foul are underestimating Manu's abilities.
That quote sounds nothing like the way Brown sounded when he said it post game.
here im gonna quote the most important part
Nevertheless, Brown said he grudgingly admired how Ginobili had duped Gibson into committing a foul that would have given him three free throws had he missed the shot.grudgingly admired
^^ actuallly you're right. In the presser the quote shows that he wasn't really complaining about the call or "tricking refs", on paper, it looks like he's making a connection to the refs.
"he's leaning to the right, right into him, because 'Boobie' (Gibson) jumped to the side of him. Sometimes a guy like that is able to trick officials and young guys because he's been around the game for such a long time."
I guess the second part he was just talking in general, how Manu's a wiley player, like Cassell drawing contact on a play.
I still think Gibson took the bait, and Manu didn't have to draw the contact any different, then any other recognition play where the shooter capitalizes on a defensive lapse.
I just got the vibe that Brown was pulling similar recognition like the Nash implied three point play where Nash was "pulled" into Ginobili, because Ginobili grabbed his arm.
hmmm being young became synonim of stupid recently??
'Yeah and Nash doesnt!!!!!!!!!!!
So does he have gravitational pull now? I certainly didn't see Manu lean at all, and I went back and watched it. Looked like Boobie plowed into him. But Nash ed after plowing into Manu, too. Maybe Manu's telekinetic.
But I agree with you on the other point: If Brown was complaining, it was thickly wrapped in compliments for Manu, because it didn't sound the same way it reads. It sounded more to me like he was disappointed in his rookie for getting outsmarted. That's probably why Brown has been reluctant to start him.
Recently? Naw, being young is synonymous with being stupid since the dawn of time.
Manu flinched then went up and down (straight), and Boobie over committed to the block and hit Manu. It's happened to better guys, but it's not the end of the world. Just this game.
I re-watched the play. He didn't lean for . He went up, made the three and and fell back after getting fouled. He didn't have to do much acting either. The rookie ran at Ginobili and tried to block a jump shooter. Isn't that Pop's biggest pet peeve ?
Maybe Brown was really trying to help Gibson with those comments since he killed the Cavs rally with a stupid mistake.
Manu didn't lean into anyone. He jumped straight up and down. I don't think it's so much of an insult towards Manu as it is Mike trying to do some subtle lobbying for officiating help in game 3.
Exactly. A la Phil Jackson.
Here's the thing. There is no rule that a shooter has to jump straight up. A shooter is allowed to jump sideways to shoot if they want to. If the defender has not established position, and the defender and shooter collide, normally the foul is called on the defender, regardless of the direction of the jump. It's part of the game.
Brown is gotta be the ties coach in the league if he thinks that play was a difference maker in the game and worth talking about.
how about you call your team out and your overhyped star which is getting completely embarrassed.
Brown is a pussy who will not say about Lebron because if he did, he'd get shipped out immediately. pussy
It was obviously an example of more dirty play by the Spurs.
I don't mind leaning as long as the shooter doesn't extend his arms or legs, or jumps unnaturally to one side to create contact. Everyone leans into a shot blocker to get calls. It's a smart play. I'm sure that's what Brown was saying.
