Dennis Lindsey
Rockets Vice President of Basketball Operations/Player Personnel
-I’m very proud to be a Rocket and to work here on a day-to-day basis for a team that I grew up with. Rudy, Calvin (Murphy), Hakeem, and Clyde, were why I started playing basketball. The day that I leave this job, I’ll always be a Rocket.

All is not lost. Read the blog about his evaluation of Chuck Hayes, LJ.
Here is the main piece from it written by Lindsey on Hayes.
-----------------------------------------------
Chuck Hayes is the latest example of the PIT working to provide the NBA with good, solid role players. We, like every other team in the NBA, had Chuck way down the priority list when we worked our draft rankings in April. Dean Cooper is a big proponent of overall team winning percentage for all draft prospects, and Chuck Hayes led all prospects in that one measure; we took note, but no question in hindsight we underestimated Chuck’s positive impact on the scoreboard when he plays. Chuck went on to become MVP of the PIT, leading his team to the championship of the tournament. It was then that we decided that we should bring him in for an individual workout. Measuring at 6-6 is typically a kiss of death for a power forward that has NBA aspirations (outside of Charles Barkley) if you study the history of the NBA, but looking back Chuck had some unique qualities that have allowed him to overcome his height at this stage of his young career. Chuck has what we call a “unique combination” of traits – he is very strong, fast, quick, has great hands, possess elite toughness, and he is a player who is both instinctive and smart. With all that information we still did not see him as draft-able since only one other team brought him in for a workout. Hayes then went on to play well at the Chicago Pre-Draft Camp, and would you believe his team went on to be undefeated? We brought Chuck in for a second workout thinking that he would provide good compe ion for other “priority big men;” needless to say, he did very well again. We then decided Chuck would be a good rookie free agent since we felt like he was going to be un-drafted; so we decided to bring him to summer league and possibly Veteran’s Camp since he is smart and compe ive. He helped our summer league entry go undefeated, and we brought him to Veteran’s Camp in October. He stood out during the camp and in short minutes he received in preseason games.
Protrade.com did some interesting statistical work on this year’s NBA Rookies using different measures, and minute per ratios; currently both of our rookies (Head & Hayes) rank high in Protrade’s overall rookie evaluations. In addition, Chuck has our third best plus/minus score output for our team behind Tracy and Yao. Lastly, for you John Hollinger/PER (Player Efficiency Rating) fans, Chuck has hovered around 17.00, which is a very solid PER for most players, and an especially good number for a rookie power forward. Remember that Chuck has a relatively small number of minutes played, so one has to be cautious about future predictions/forecasts, but certainly Chuck’s early returns on our investment in scouting him have been solid.
I also saw where he wanted the Rockets to draft Amare.
Those two resume points sound good enough to me.
Sorry if this was covered elsewhere but did he mastermind the Eddie Griffin deal?
Just curious.
Supposedly he was against it.
Let's hope that is the truth.
Was Lior Eliyahu his find?
He scouted him...to be sure.

Rockets VP of Basketball Operations Dennis Lindsey took a timeout from the Orlando predraft camp and workouts on Monday to answer some of our questions about Eliyahu and the upcoming draft.
"Lior has progressed very well this season and he is one of the better 21-year old big men in Europe," said Lindsey. "He is a good athlete who can really finish in the paint."
"In addition, he has good value around the NBA as several teams have asked for his rights."
While the team has not put a timetable on Eliyahu joining the NBA, Lindsey added that the Rockets are planning on bringing him over for the summer program this year, so fans should get a good look at him.
However, there could be a minor delay.
"Lior currently has a small fracture on his index finger and he is going to have minor surgery on his nose therefore we might not get him to Houston as soon as we anticipated," said Lindsey.
From what I understand he is very, very scared to play in the post against any strong/rough players. I wonder if they will try to convert him to a 3.
Yes, I would see Eliyahu as a 3 but (from the times I've seen him) he does seem to get a lot of hustle points around the basket.
Back to Lindsey, though, he did a lot of their scouting in Europe.
Seems kinda weird to base your draft plans on whether other teams bring him in for individual workouts. What if they liked what they saw at a pre-draft camp enough to pick him, or they brought him for a private workout that was kept quiet? With all that information we still did not see him as draft-able since only one other team brought him in for a workout.
You don't need to "reach" to draft a player you don't think will be drafted...if you think you can sign him after the draft.
Lindsey also attends the pre-draft Eurocamps. Here is the lineup to the 2006 camp in Treviso, Italy where Dennis served as a coach alongside some pretty special company.

Dennis Lindsey is in his 11th season with the Rockets and his fifth as Vice President of Basketball Operations/Player Personnel. In his current position, Lindsey assists General Manager Carroll Dawson with the evaluation of draft prospects, free agents and potential trades. In addition, he helps in salary cap matters and statistical evaluation for professional and amateur talent. Lindsey also coordinates the scouting of amateur and professional talent.
Before his promotion to Vice President, Lindsey spent three seasons as Director of Player Personnel. During the 1998-99 season, Lindsey served as the Rockets Director of Basketball Development. Lindsey joined the Rockets before the 1996-97 season as personnel video coordinator/scout, a position he held for two years.
Prior to coming to the Rockets, Lindsey was the assistant basketball coach and recruiting coordinator at Pensacola Junior College for two years. During his time in Florida, Pensacola was nationally ranked during both seasons. Before venturing to Pensacola, Lindsey was the assistant head coach at Fort Worth Southwest High School.
A starter at Baylor University, Lindsey helped the Bears advance to the NCAA Tournament in 1988 and the NIT Tournament in 1990. After graduating from Baylor with a bachelor's degree in education in 1992, Lindsey received his master's in sports management in 1994 from the United States Sports Academy. As a high school player in 1987, Lindsey took the Houston Select BCI Team to the national championship.
Born in Freeport, Texas, Lindsey and his wife, Becky, reside in Missouri City with their sons, Jacob and Matthew, and daughters, Meredith and Jessica Claire. Becky's father is F.A. Dry, the former head football coach at Tulsa and Texas Christian, as well as an assistant with the Houston Oilers. He was on the sidelines for the first college and professional football games played in the Astrodome.
Actually the biggest thing I don't like about the guy is I don't think he's in it for the Spurs.
I forget the exact wording, but in one of the stories on his hiring he talks about coming to SA to get experience that will be valuable when he moves on in the basketball world.
that, I don't want a guy treating this as a stepping stone, I want a guy who is willing to become a part of the Spurs family.
Pop has a history of wanting people to do well for themselves and promoting their careers.
If you think someone who was next in line to be GM will be satisfied being a Spurs assistant for a long period of time, you're being selfish and drinking a big glass of haterade.
So, how old are you, 12?
I get to help interview people for positions in our company. People who are talking about themselves and future jobs after ours before they're even hired aren't going to be good employees and don't even make it past the first round of interviews.
I want to see all the guys working for Spurs *secretly* want to be GM some day, that will drive their individual greatness. I don't want to see them already talking about their next job and how great they are because they worked for the Spurs BEFORE they even started working for them.
That's not selfish or drinking haterade, it's called how things work in the real world.
So the Spurs replace Presti with a 30 something ambitious basketball mind who is well versed in the draft and international scouting? Works for me.
I wonder if he uttered that before or after Morey replaced him as Dawson's heir apparent. In any event, it's not inconceivable that the Spurs could retire Robert Horry's jersey #. The times, they are a changin'.
He uttered them years before.
Yeah if so, I don't see the downside. So the Spurs replace Presti with a 30 something ambitious basketball mind who is well versed in the draft and international scouting? Works for me
Where can I get a pair of you guys' rose colored glasses?? This guy will be mediocre at best...you don't find guys who's experience prior to the Rockets include.Prior to coming to the Rockets, Lindsey was the assistant basketball coach and recruiting coordinator at Pensacola Junior College for two years.
...AN ASSISTANT COACH AT A JUNIOR COLLEGE? Are you ing kidding me??
no no no...I'm pissed. We made a hasty decision.
Uh, he's been with the Rockets for 11 years. It's not like he didn't pan out.
Aggie,
Sorry but I disagree. Basketball is a business, and FO jobs are like any other job in the business world. You want the person identified with the brand and comfortable working with others, but other than that, you can't ask for more.
Cheers
So in other words, you want your prospective employees to lie to you. Sorry to agree with the 12-year-old,but there's some kind of gatorade drinking going on here.
