NBA Extends TV Deal With ABC/ESPN And TNT

    POSTED: 12:09 pm CDT June 27, 2007

New York, NY -- (Sports Network) - The National Basketball Association has extended its television contracts with ABC/ESPN and TNT through the 2015-16 season.

Financial details of the deals were not immediately disclosed.

"We are honored by the expression of confidence that these contracts, with two of the most respected media companies in the world, represent," said NBA commissioner David Stern. "The NBA's future as important, one-of-a-kind event programming has once again been affirmed."

The extension will keep NBA games on national television on Wednesdays (ESPN), Thursdays (TNT), Fridays (ESPN) and Sundays (ABC). The remainder of the weekday games will be broadcast on NBA TV, a 24-hour network that is run by the league.

The new deal will also include rights for digital media content, which will give the networks the ability to broadcast live games and other content on digital media, including the Web and mobile TV. The deal also covers any new outlets ESPN develops between now and 2016.

ABC will continue to air 15 regular season games, beginning on Christmas Day, and the entire NBA Finals broadcast in prime time.

ESPN and ESPN2 will continue to show up to 75 regular season games as well as up to 29 playoff games and one of the conference finals. ESPN will increase the number of early round playoff games it airs.

The contract also includes new rights for ESPN International to televise games worldwide.

TNT will continue to air 52 regular season games, as well as opening night, the All-Star Game and one of the conference finals.

NBA TV will broadcast 96 regular season games and up to nine playoff games.

The previous deal, which was set to expire at the end of the 2007-08 season, paid the NBA an average of $765 million a year.

Three championships with ABC/ESPN. One with NBC. It's not all bad.
