I hope not.
I've been wanting the Spurs to find a Haslem like player to go next to Duncan for a while. It struck me yesterday that Splitter could be that guy. I know they're not exactly the same players but is it too much of a stretch to think that Splitter could become a really nice starting role player. Albeit without much upside or flair.
Splitter's ceiling is probably along the lines of a nine point, seven rebound type center. However, he's a pretty good perimeter defender for his size, so in that way he could be a little like Haslem.
Then again, Splitter is a good four inches taller than Haslem.
Any chance that Splitter could effectively slow Dirk down?
Splitter has Elson like mobility on the perimeter defensively and might even be a little longer. That said, I think you need a Stephen Jackson or James Posey sized player to best matchup with Dirk.
Yes. He is already considered one of the better defenders in Europe. Before he played for TAU he played on the perimeter as well. I think he automatically becomes our best option against Dirk should he join the team. He has the length, footspeed and supposedly the defensive fundamentals to do a good job.
Haslem and Splitter are both taller than 6'-7", so in that way I think they are similar.
Any chance he can be a Rasheed Wallace caliber player?
He doesn't have to completely shut down Nowitzki, just slow him down. If we can frustrate him just a bit Dirk has shown that he'll take care of the rest. Then Bowen can spend his time on Josh Howard.
Do we think that Nocioni (if he came to SA) would be a competant Dirk stopper (or more likely, Dirk Slower)? It would be nice to be able to throw a couple varied defenders his way between Noc, Bowen and Splitter.
Possibly...
less the post game, the 3 point range and the rage blackouts
I hope he is proficient at protecting the rim too.
If he is already getting the "guard/slow down dirk" treatment then it only makes common mariott fans like me more pissed that he wont be on the roster next year.
Of course, if he was available this season he would have gone top 10 and Spurs wouldn't have selected him anyway.
It's kinda funny that Splitter was regarded as a top ten pick the last four drafts and then when he finally is forced into the draft, he falls to the Spurs at 28. I thought he was overrated as a top ten pick but as a 28 pick, that's some pretty damn good value.
Last year, most people had Splitter going between 6 and 8 if he stayed in the draft.
Last year's draft class was horrible though. I mean, Aaron Gray was a first round pick (albeit, late) if he'd come out last year. He went 49th this year. Thats about a 20 slot slide.
That being said, Splitter at 28 is unbelievable value. Considering that his first 4 years in the league he'll be playing for us at a rock bottom price I'm absolutely giddy. Bigs are always expensive, and being able to get a guy like Tiago that is ready to contribute NOW for so little green will open up cap space for other players down the line.
wonder whats his potential?
at best i dunno
worst case = darko
Our best option against Dirk is playing him in a close game.
I still believe in Darko!![]()

I don't think he is quite that mobile, at least from what I have seen...he is between Fabs and Elson quickness-wise.
I think a big reason he fell is his current contract and many teams didn't want anything to do with it.
him and about 95% of the bigs in the league
