Reducing the size of Avatars - help?

I figured I ought to finally put up an avatar, and I've been trying to crop one of my pictures to use, but I took it at 5Mpixels and no matter how much I crop and resize I can't reduce the size of the file below about 36kB (needs to be under 20kB to use as an avatar). Anyone tell me how to get around this?

Also, I'd like to be able to do it myself. I generally crop and then resize, but is there another control you can use to reduce the file size? If there is, I can't find it. I'm using ACD photo editor.

I went to your link, but re-sizing is not the problem. I have cropped and resized the photo below the 120x80 threshold, and it is as small as i can get it, but it is still 36kB. It is the file size that is the problem.

cropping & resizing are two different things. Man you think you know everything about a woman's biological clock but you can't figure this out?

resizing is about the pixels. If you make them small enough then the file size will get smaller.

If you have a animation, then you need to remove some of the frames.

Okay, I've worked it out. In Irfanview you can remove something called "EXIF tags", and that vastly reduces the size of the file (from 35kB to 2.5kB)!

Yes, but you get to a point where you can't take away any more pixels and i was at that point, but the file was still 35kB.

Actually, the biological clock was not the issue there, a 24 year old deciding that she wanted to get herself knocked up alone was what made no sense to me.

And yes, I do understand cropping and resizing, and i was doing both, but the file would not get any smaller than about 35kB.

Now, smartypants, explain this EXIF tag business to me and why taking them off reduced the file size by about 17 times!

I think I could probably do what you've done to those photos, although I really need to get to know my image software a lot better.
