Smashing Pumpkins - Zeitgeist

Despite never reading Blinking With Fists or owning any of his solo crap, I've been accused of being Billy Corgan's butt boy. I am not. I am a big Smashing Pumpkins fan though. So I figured I oughta make a thread on the new SP album.

First off, I'd like to share what is found in the liner notes. This is word for word what is in there.

Just so that if anyone got the idea that perhaps Mr. Corgan had relinquished his status as the most self-absorbed, pretensious in the rock world, well, he hasn't. He still is.

As far as the album goes, it's just okay. Not great, but it doesn't ruin the good name of the Smashing Pumpkins. I'd still probably rank it last out of all the SP albums, but WAY better than Corgan's solo crap (although in a way I kinda view this as a glorified Corgan solo album since D'Arcy and James Iha had no involvement).

It's also pretty heavy and aggressive, so anybody that thought Adore was " gy" will probably like this alot better.

Overall I give it a B.

I have a friend who has forgot more SP than anyone else will ever learn and he thought TheFutureEmbrace was one of the most progressive peices ever. I haven't heard any of it cuz its called TheFutureEmbrace.


I preordered the album on iTunes just to get into the ticket presale (still haven't got my password.........) and have only listened to a few songs so far. I really really like Bleeding the Orchid and Bring the Light. Very cool tunes.

LOLx10000 at everyone on every forum finally acknowledging Billy as the most pretentious bas of all time. I can believe it says that in the liner notes. Hilarrrious dah.

Do you think it sounds like 90's rock, does it fit in today's scene, or does this album sound progressive to you?

From the sounds of it, NIN has surpassed SP in my eyes. But I still need to listen to it a few times to give a final judgement.


peewee--i thought Mary Star of the Sea was a bigger abortion of an album than Ministry's With Sympathy, Gwar's We Kill Everything, NIN's With Teeth, and TheFutureEmbrace combined.


Monosylab--you should check out some of the individual reviews of this album. I haven't even listened to the thing yet but I can tell it has attracted alot of poser fans. Pretty funny to listen to their reviews....calling "machina" a mellow sound, rofl, saying Zero and Bullet... were their best songs, rofl,
priceless.

Ugh...

almost done listening to the album, kinda dissapointed, ironically the best songs I've heard are the two I just mentioned in the previous post. Hopefully it grows on me, cuz alot of these sound too....bland...for me.
I'm not hearing any tracks with standout Jimmy performances. Hopefully I just have to listen more closely..

With Sympathy is badass, and is one of the best album covers of all time. I will not hear ill spoken of it.

Not much more than a Zwan 2.0, with a little future embrace thrown in. I mean, you look at lead singers that have multiple projects and there's a distinct sound to it. What's to say that this is any different than Corgan's last two non-pumpkin albums? Also, I don't usually have a problem with Billy's voice, but it seems to have taken on a new, irritating pitch for this record. I can't get through a few tracks that are heavy on the harmonizing. I've also got a non-music related gripe with the record. Normally I don't have a problem with a band releasing special limited editions or whatever, but four each with a different bonus track is a bit over the top. Especially considering they were all released simultaneously.
