Actually they do sometimes. I would take the job but I will be working at a new laptop/desktop repair shop in a few weeks and I don't want to leave them hanging by quiting on them. The sad part is I already sent them my resume and 20 minutes later got a call that I will be working somewhere else.

I am hoping someone here can fill the spot so I will be off the hook.

I am not sure since I have not called them. I don't even have a car so I know my response time would be a tad on the late side since I have to rely on VIA.

The good news is this man I am going 1/2 with at the new laptop service shop is providing me with transportation.

If you want a cool IT job try this link they are looking.

I operated my own "firm" under a DBA and had a couple of firms in Austin (a startup and a legal services agency) that exclusively used me as their PC and network support guy. Timeframe was '96-'99 or so. It was something I did on the side and rarely was more than 10 hrs/week. A few weeks were 20-30 hours which sure made for some nice checks when they paid my invoices.

Had the Texas Society of Professional Engineers threaten to take me to court because I used the term "Engineering" in the DBA, which was never advertised. Seems the fine people in our legislature gave them the authority to regulate who could use the term "engineering" and they did not consider software engineering (I did Unix support as well) to be a legitimate use. They actually had some intern sifting DBA records at all the county courthouses finding this sort of thing.

I got a BSCS from Trinity in the early 80s (mostly mainframe stuff) and did a lot of work with PCs in college and early in my career (Apples and Northstars in the late 70s, was tech lead for Lockheed's PC support group in the 80s), and just dinked with them a lot after that. By the time I was doing the fun stuff for big bucks I was actually managing a customer software porting center for a living - a job with a lot of flexibility and a cool boss that would let me flex my hours as long as it didn't impact my customer commitments.

Nowadays I have moved on to other things and my current employer wouldn't let me do work on the side even if I had the time or talent.

Dam bro you remind me of crazyone, The dude had a pc back when they didn't use Hard drives, I came around late. My next door neighbor gave me a HP 333mhz back in 1996 cause he was tired of me asking him what was new on Art Bell's Grassy Knoll website.

I got a FAT 32 page when i was trying to boot up one day and took my PC to help me computers on Austin HWY after about 2 hours the man on the phone said he was not sure I may have a virus. I asked him how much do i owe and he said 108.00 dollars they charge 50 dollars an hour. I told him to stop and after that day I never went to a PC shop again.

I was wondering about a few things if you don't mind. Do you think notebooks and laptops will become like DVD players and most folks will just buy new ones instead of fixing them?

And how come when folks post they are having PC problems you don't chime in?
Are you not tempted? Somehow I picture you laughing your ass off as we all complain about something you consider 5th grade level to fix.

Dude you work as you study. When your not on call you study. It's not like they are going to send you to 4 places a day.

But I can see how school eats up your time you may want to relax during your non study nights. You see as most guys masturbate to a picture that looks like a girl In Batman's long ass signature? guys like me dream about a new ASUS motherboards or maybe buying 5 laptops off eBay for 100.00 dollars.

My first personal "PC" was a TRS-80 Model I with 4K of RAM and a cassette deck to save/load programs. An Apple ][ with 48K came later, and even later after that a floppy which stored 180K ... or was it 360K? I do remember cutting notches in the 5 1/4" media so I could use both sides of the floppy, a common tactic back then.

PCs becoming disposable commodities - not as long as ppl store their data on a local HD, too hard for Joe User to transfer it from box A to box B. Perhaps if Dell's flash HD concept takes hold - even then given the vagaries of Windoze it seems somewhat unlikely given the amount of OS customization each box requires.

Re me being some sort of sooperPC guru - not any more (if ever). Once in a while I chime in the PC help threads but my tech skills are getting pretty stale these days.
