to come to the NBA sooner rather than later?
i prefer to have him > mahinmi to come over now...
He can't....
He has no buyout option available with his club for this year. That buyout is a reasonable $1M next year, so the Spurs will pay $500K and the rest will be absorbed into his salary.
Splitter will be a Spur for the 08-09 season, not sooner or later.
It's clear Splitter will be joining the team next summer, unless they can find a way to save another $7 mil.

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Spurs have traded forward/center prospect Tiago Splitter and forward Viktor Sanikidze for cash considerations. The club had been looking to free up some much needed cap space after signing backup point guard Beno Udrih to a seven year, $63 million deal.
Thank god. We finally solidified that backup bench vagina need.
I really don't mind Splitter spending another year in Europe. It would be hard for him to play a sizeable role with the Spurs this season and next year he has the opportunity to be "the guy" with Tau. Who knows, one year as the primary post player might do him wonders.
Over the long haul Splitter and Mahinmi fit the Spurs current image of bigs better than Scola and Butler. They want greyhounds (like Elson) beside Duncan even at the possible expense of other skills. And who can argue so far.
I agree, the Spurs are looking for guys who can play at both ends of the floor but most importantly on the defensive side. I doubt either Butler or Scola will be able to do that. If we have 5 more years of the Duncan era neither Scola nor Butler would have fit in very well. Scola was never going to fit in here, he is just not the right type of player. Butler, at his very best might be as good as Dampier in Dallas, but I don't ever see him being that good, he is potential and nothing more.
Because both of their strengths are scoring and Duncan assumes (and subsumes) that role down low.
and with whatever they have left over, they will use to sign an old fart as a much needed back up role player. ALL THIS AND GUESS WHAT..........THEY'LL STILL WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP!! HOW DO THEY IN DO IT! While all these other teams go out and make blockbuster trades and sign "name brand" free agents over the summer, the spurs are boring and stand pat and basically do nothing other than signing over the hill guys. But in the end, who has 4 rings? Unbelievable! Okay, I'm done.
Someone unclear on the concept of either 'asset' or 'young, talented player'.
drafting splitter was a great draft pick for the spurs.
now you know why the spurs let scola go for nothing.
splitter will be in a spurs uni next season.
You couldn't fit that all into one post, poultry hound?

Perhaps the Spurs accomodated Scola's trade because Splitter knows first hand from Luis about his dealings with the Spurs.
Huh?
At least try to make sense with your backhanded comments aimed at the Spurs. You're so giddy with all these Spurs fans mad that you can't type straight.
Has Printezis gotten over the disappointment yet?
calling splitter a "monster" down low is hilarious. even more than the usual bull , that's probably the funniest thing i've read on here in weeks.
Scola was very unhappy with the way that the Spurs treated him. Splitter is his teammate and friend who surely knows about Scola's anger. Players in Europe who know Scola have felt bad for him and how things went with the Spurs. So the Spurs trade Scola to Houston and suddenly care about his dream of playing in the NBA.
He had a blast in Toronto- loved the Greek town where they treated him like a Superstar. He also has enough brains to know that without Toronto, he does not get drafted at all.
"way that the Spurs treated him"
His contract made him unavailable. The Spurs weren't involved.
