my guess is Pop thought Scola or Butler couldnt be good Spurs material in long term so he gave them up

The trade can only be fully scrutinized after all the chips have fallen. If this was act 1 of something bigger, then let's wait and see.
I still find it amazing that Luis Scola became an all-star the minute he was dealt to Houston. Prior to that, he was some moron locked into a bad deal in Europe and wasn't NBA-ready.

Spurs just won a 4th ring without having to face the team that bounced them out of the prior postseason and with their 2nd round opponent's best big suspended for a crucial game 5. They aren't that far above the rest of the league. Standing pat is questionable. Gifting talent away to a division rival to save a little is worse.
