Discovery's "Man vs. Wild" Caught Faking Aspects Of Show : [ send to a friend ]
Discovery Channel is taking a close look at one of its most popular series, "Man vs. Wild," after allegations that its host was in fact spending the night in motels when he was supposed to be surviving the great outdoors.
The network issued a statement Monday in response to an investigation launched by British television network Channel 4. Channel 4 says that host Bear Grylls had partaken of indoor accommodations on at least two occasions when his series had depicted him spending the night in the wild.
In each episode of the series, Grylls is airlifted into the wilderness with only a few tools to aid in his survival, such as a flint or water bottle. A former British special forces soldier, Grylls is typically depicted as surviving for several days without intervention or interruption while cameramen follow him offscreen.
But among the charges made against Grylls is that a raft he is depicted as having built himself actually was constructed and then disassembled by consultants to the show in order for the host to put it together. In another episode, Grylls happens upon what are re
ferred to as wild horses that were said to be brought in from a trekking station.
"Discovery Communications has learned that isolated elements of the 'Man vs. Wild' show in some episodes were not natural to the environment," the network said in a statement.
But the company gave no indication about parting ways with the series, only making certain unspecified alterations.
"Moving forward, the program will be 100% transparent and all elements of the filming will be explained upfront to our viewers," Discovery said.
They didn't elaborate on what exact measures will be taken but it could simply mean a disclaimer will precede each episode informing that some events are dramatized.

haha ...i knew it couldnt all be real.
i still think he is bad ass...but...meh...
The second and third ones are true(Raft/Horses), they're on Wikipedia's Man vs Wild page. I don't know why Discovery channel would be upset about this, as they themselves have forced some aided help to Bear during the filming process, which Bear disapproved of. Don't know about the indoor accomdations. I wanna see the new season coming up, see how it is and what they mean by this:
But still anybody who dives face first in a Zebra carcass is badass.Moving forward, the program will be 100% transparent and all elements of the filming will be explained upfront to our viewers," Discovery said.
I've only seen one episode... where he was in Canada I think? He "found" an abandoned house and from there he got the idea that he needed to get across the lake because tourist boats tour the ice glaciers that were on the other side....
As he was walking towards the lakeside of the house he "found" an "abandoned" boat that would make his trek faster. But that boat looked brand spanking new.
I watched the rest of the episode but thought that was a little too convenient. Not to mention that his hair always looked perfect.
Is this the one where the guy has a cameraman following him around?
Another one to add to the "Worst Sports Week ever" pile.
Even if it's true, it's not gonna bother me that much. I'll still watch it. Dude does some crazy out there.
Drinking his own urine.
Eating raw fish and animals.
Jumping butt naked into frigid waters to show how to get out.
Dude may not be spending every single night in the wild like he portrays, but he definitely knows the survival skills.
How can you be sure? Maybe it's chilled urine he has flown in.
Prepared by a sushi chef in the trailer.Eating raw fish and animals.
Followed by piping hot Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee and a Mount Gay Rum hot toddy nightcap to take the chill off.Jumping butt naked into frigid waters to show how to get out.
Biggest survival skill of all = mastering the spin.Dude may not be spending every single night in the wild like he portrays, but he definitely knows the survival skills.![]()
The only alcohol beverage Bear drinks is Whiskey and Whiskey ONLY.
And the Zebra carcass/Frog/Unknown animal carcass weren't really clean looking.
I'm fairly confident that 90% of it is legit. My biggest su ion has always been about him pretending like he doesn't know where he is when he jumps out of the plane. I think he knows exactly where he's jumping out at, and how to get back to civilization. He just uses his survival skills along the way. That's my opinion anyway.
I was in the 82nd Airborne, and I worked briefly with a few special forces troops. Trautman wasn't lying in First Blood when he said Rambo will eat things that would make a billy goat puke. Them special forces guys will eat the ass out of a dead skunk if it means accomplishing the mission.
i've heard him say he enjoys scotch, but that's whisky.
And in other news...water is wet.
I read on his bio that he is a born again devout Catholic and the only thing he drinks is whiskey.
I don't get what one has to do with the other.
And if it did, you'd think he would drink only wine.
He said he's abstained from drinking all together, but he has some sort of wierd liking to Whiskey and that's the only thing he drinks.
screw that!!!
lets wait to jump to conclusions. furthermore, as already mentioned, Bear does some amazing things that obviously are not fake. so i will be watching his show anyway....
You told us all Discovery channel was all aware of this.
Where exactly can you show us proof that Discovery channel forced some unwanted aid to Bear? Sounds like he'll take all the aid he can get.
Ummm...ok.
Just don't tell me Deadliest Catch is fake. That would suck ass.
Says on Wikipedia's Main Article page for Man vs Wild. Discovery didn't know about the alleged indoor accomdations, I think that's why they're upset about, but then that would be hypocritical, because they gave Bear aid as well.
