First of all- after three weeks I finally have my home computer back completely fixed. Yea me!

    Secondly- two questions.

    1) I had to have my hard drive re formatted. It is asking me if I want to have the Phishing filter on to screen for potentially dangerous websites.
Do I need this since I already have Norton anti virus installed.

    2) Also, some of you may know that my mom is here visiting at my house for a month.
Because we are both frequent computer users and my computer is in my room, I want to get her set up with wireless on her lap top.

I used Time warner and plug the cable cord right into my next top. What does she need for her laptop to access my internet?
    Also, approximate cost estimate?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Where did you take your PC that it took so long to get back? if you don't mind.

    1) I had to have my hard drive re formatted.
Who told you that was necessary if you don't mind.

It is asking me if I want to have the Phishing filter on to screen for potentially dangerous websites
Don't add anymore filters why slow down your surfing. As long as you are protected let the program do it's job.

Do I need this since I already have Norton anti virus installed.

sorry but, if you think Norton will keep your PC Virus free? then be ready to have your HD flushed again.

All you need is Avast (free)
    ccleaner (free)
    and Ewido (free)
    and you will be ok.

Good luck trying to get Norton off your HD. You would have better luck getting your Dog to want to sleep over Mike Vic's house for the weekend.

You can get one of these for 8.00 dollars off eBay or go to Office Max

Man 3 weeks and a HD format? I've troubleshooted a ton of PC problems (mostly my own) and the only time I need to wait is if I burned the power supply or mobo or video card.

The newest Nortons actually gets pretty much everything but you still have to buy a subscription when stuff like avast and avg are free and a lot less annoying. Norton's heurustics pick up so much legit stuff (mostly scripts) that I have to constantly turn it off.

Phishing filter depends if you do any online financials as it filters out stuff that can cost you big time financially if you don't pay attention. Sites used to be able to use odd unicode characters so a scammer could do something like www.pǎypal.com and old versions of IE would show it as www.paypal.com. Phishing filter stops that, but in all my time online (a lot) I've never actually ran into a phishing site.

All you need is a wireless card and a wireless router. My time warner modems were all cabled (AT&T has built in wireless modem!) so you would have to run a cable from the modem to a wireless router, set the permissions on the wireless network so people dont steal your internets and find the channel on the laptop. But maybe TWC has wireless boxes now and that's all outdated.

I was without a computer for three weeks. They "fixed" it- ran restore hardware. I picked it up, brought it home and it still wasn't fixed and so I took it back.
Not all the three weeks was repair time. Some of it was them having it in line to be looked at, my work schedule not allowing me to pick it up/ take it back right away etc.

Also I was having issues with Time Warner so for awhile I had a computer but no internet access.

My family always used Norton's and so when I left home, I just continued to do so.
What do you have against Norton's?

Thanks for the router info. I am not very good with installing things. Will call Time Warner and see what they suggest as far as equipment.

Time Warner will try to set you up with their home networking, make sure you get prices and post them here before you order anything, if she's going to be there a month I'd go the cheapest route available.

You have a desktop or a laptop?

I have fixed over 8 notebooks/desktops this month all of them Infected with trojans, all of them had Norton, you do the math.

You buy a Linky's modem, you plug the cable that was in from Time warner modem to the Linky's router. you add a links'y modem to your PC and your set it takes 4 minutes.

It is a laptop I want to get set up with the internet. Mom is actually leaving it with me so I want to have it internet compatible long term.

If that's the case then I'd check the prices on Time Warners setup and let us know, we can give you prices on what you'd need if you bought it yourself, which would essentially be a wireless router and a wireless network card for the laptop, if it doesn't have one already.

Time Warner would probably cost more but you don't have to do anything, buying the hardware yourself will probably cost less, but you'll have to do it yourself. It would probably take you more than four minutes, but it's not hard at all.

    Sounds manageable. Thanks.

So after that. if the laptop has a wireless card in it, it will be able to access internet?

And an unrelated question. Why is it that absolutely no customer needs a gift card or directions unless I am on here?
    ( I am at work.)

The linky's and Belkin modems and cards come with a disc in case your laptop does not recognize the router. If you have a new laptop with the built in wireless card you will see an icon that look like a desktop at the bottom of the browser it will have a red X on it you right click it and click on connect or repair. and the laptop should pick up the Linky's signal if you are within the 150 foot ratios.

    Angel,
When we still lived in the city limits and had TWC they gave us a modem for for free. We just plugged the cable in to the modem and then the cable that came out went into the dLink wireless router we purchased for about $60 on sale. From the router we ran cables out to the desktop units so they would get signals and used the wireless card in the lap top to pick up a signal from the wireless router.

If you get the time warner thing...you'll be "renting" the equipment...watch the sales at best buy and circuit city tomorrow, you'll find a wireless router for about $30-$40. they're basically plug n play...setting up security is pretty easy too. as far as that place goes, please tell us where you went. what they told you, or what you said on here doesn't make much sense. i hope you didn't pay too much. oh and i don't use any of that crap that mouse posted about. i just use symantec corporate and defender....never had anything happen to my pc.

Thats what I'm doing. Instead of renting their wireless router with the built in modem, I just got their basic internet service and they provided me the modem. I bought a wireless net gear router for $30 at best buy and hooked it up to the modem.

As far as anti virus goes, I just use the free software from CA that time warner provides.

The reason my explanation does not make sense, I imagine is because I am not good with technical terms and computer lingo.

As for who fixed my pc, I don't like to bad mouth people. Bad karma, especially since I am not sure how much of what happened, if any, was avoidable.

Norton is a big hit on performance. The suggestions for free protection are good, though I would add Spybot.

oh and i don't use any of that crap that mouse posted about.
Your calling EWIDO crap? How long have you been working on PCs? It's the hottest out there right now! It's so good, AVG had to merge with them so McAfee and Norton would not get their hands on the software. Try downloading it and see what it finds on your so well protected Defender software you have now.

Do a screen shot afterwards so I can see what it found.

    Heres the link

    http://www.ewido.net/en/

As far as the other so called Crap I use ,ccleaner Is the best and fastest way to clean your PC even Kori uses it. And it's free.

I use it for the Issues feature it replaces missing DLL files. You know how much money I have made showing up to someone's house running the ccleaner and collecting 25.00 dollars in under 5 minutes? This man was on the phone for 8 hours with the DELL people and they could not figure out why his DVD burner would not show up. The ccleaner fixed all registry and DLL issues and bam! he had a working pc with all working parts. The man practically wanted to give me head right there.

If you don't know about ccleaner than your missing out.

As far as AVAST goes, if you think Defender can out do AVAST then why is it 4 out of 5 PCs I work on have Defender? I have only worked on one PC in the last 3 months that had AVAST and that was because the person never did a Boot up scan.
Most people have no idea the serious Trojans have to be found and removed before windows boots up.

and unlike Defender, Avast doesn't slow down the PC by asking you are you sure you want to use Google or any other harmless browser. I am surprised Defender doesn't ask you if brushed your teeth before you turn off the computer.

I will be waiting for the screen shot after the Ewido scan. Hopefully you will post the original page.
