I think he can be a very good option to play PF in small ball lineup.

    He also can guard Dirk

I don't care if he's old. The guy can help. Sign him for a one year deal and see what happen

LOL, I'm almost tempted to want the Spurs to sign him just to get those people who thought we were "too physical" and "dirty" in the postseason up in arms and crapping their pants at the same time.

patterson is crazy... i just read the article about his suspected rape incident and it also mentions patterson just getting off probation or some for breaking a man's jaw. we don't need that on the spurs.

While I think he'd be a horrible fit in SA, surely a registered sex offender like Patterson would keep Dirk honest when trying to draw fouls.

He's an amazing player on the court. He single-handedly ruined Manu's phsyche for several games last season. Ruben totally shut him down in the game in Milwaukee. Manu was out of rhythm and needed a confidence B12 shot.

It's the other stuff about Ruben that makes you shudder. Let's just say he's not exactly "good people".

I have no question he would be great on the court...so I agree with you there. It's the off-court behavior that draws huge concern.

PS. I meant to say "psyche" but got an extra h in there for flavor. Sorry about that. I went back and checked my memory on the Milwaukee game and Manu went 2-10 and 1-6 on 3-PT FGs with Ruben defending him. Then Manu proceeded to shoot 22% from the field and 17% 3-PT FG over that four-game stretch.

We don't to worry about our character. Ruben Patterson does.

Thats exactly correct. This guy would be on this team if he didn't have all the off-court stuff. Hes an absolutely solid basketball player with a variety of skills, but hes always hurting himself in places other than the hardwood.

Living in Wisconsin I have seen alota Bucks games these past few years. And if I were to go by JUST what I saw on the court, Id say sign him FOR SURE. But, he has major issues. I dont know if he is worth the risk.

There are still some wing players out there. It is interesting that you hear literally nothing about them, just very few rumors. If the Spurs don't manage to land Udoka, Barnes (unlikely I know) or Posey I would be okay with the signing of Patterson. If he is in shape he can be a very good defender. I really don't know a lot about his mental issues so that is up to the Spurs.

One cancer on a team is manageable. I'm not saying I am pro-Patterson necessarily, but if he's the only bad character guy on the roster, I don't think he'd tip the boat over.

Once you get colon cancer, is one spot manageable but two spots less so?

A locker-room cancer can't be literally compared with cancer.

My question was figurative. A locker-room cancer can be figuratively compared with cancer. A cancer is a bad or evil influence that can spread destructively in an en y. A cancer may spread more quickly with two bad influences, than with one, but one player can influence another and create a spreading problem just as easily. Complaining about playing time and butting heads with the coach over it can be a solitary issue but depending on the severity, it can also create ripples.

Ruben's broken a guy's jaw and he's been punished for an alleged rape. Unfortunately, he has to register in the state he resides as a sex offender. I hope Ruben has changed his ways and repented. Some say that he has changed for the better and matured. If the Spurs sign him, I will hope for that and think positively.

I like what Ruben brings to the basketball floor skills-wise...just as I liked what Alvin Robertson and Vernon Maxwell did on the basketball floor with their skills. Alvin could be nice but Alvin Robertson also tried to stab a fellow player with a butter knife. Alvin ended up in an orange jumpsuit for other incidents in his life off the court. Alvin is an emotional guy, just as Vernon was and just as Ruben is. Alvin wasn't able to mature and change enough to make a difference but hopefully Ruben has.

No question...and keep in mind, I did say that I wasn't necessarily on the Rube bandwagon. However:

Don't you think Rube would have to be a locker-room drama queen on the order of TO, Artest, or Kobe to bring down the Spurs' locker room? Ruben is not a great guy by any means, but he doesn't seem to be terribly disruptive between the lines.

Patterson may not be done committing various acts of thuggery, but Stephen Jackson fell into line while he was here. And it seems like Patterson has been well-behaved for a few years.

Glenn Robinson was known as a disruptive guy during his career, but he didn't start any foolishness in 05. Granted, it was a very short time and he was playing for a contract, but still. Nick Van Exel didn't have a squeaky clean past, but he toed the line last year. (Too bad he couldn't play anymore)

I think that a lot of these guys will blow with the wind depending on where they go. In San Antonio, professionalism is a point of emphasis, so more than likely Patterson would do as the Romans do.

The Spurs actually DID offer Sprewell a contract in March of '06 and even had P.J. sign of on the deal. It was Sprewell that chose not to come to San Antonio, for whatever reason.

    He have no skills.
He is physical but has no jumper so he is a small forward who plays in the post.
