I think he'll be a perfect mentor for Russell, teaching him all the nuances of being a fat, overrated QB with a bad at ude.

    Raiders reportedly will sign Culpepper
Quarterback could serve as mentor for No. 1 draft pick Russell

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland Raiders will sign free-agent quarterback Daunte Culpepper, the Oakland Tribune reported Tuesday, citing a source close to the situation.

Culpepper was scheduled to work out for the team on Tuesday morning.

According to the newspaper, Raiders’ coach Lane Kiffin confirmed on Monday that the team was considering the three-time Pro Bowl selection. On Sunday, Kiffin described contract negotiations between the Raiders and quarterback Jamarcus Russell, the team’s No. 1 draft pick, as “going kind of slow.”

“We’re flying (Culpepper) in,” Kiffin told the Tribune. “Any time you have a chance to investigate something that could help our team win, we’re going to do it. Obviously, Daunte is something we’ve been looking into a little bit, and this is the climax of it.”

Kiffen added that the term’s inability to reach long-term agreement with the former LSU quarterback is obviously a factor in the decision to bring in Culpepper.

“Sure it has to do with that,” he said. “You’ve got to take everything into consideration. You’ve got to protect your team, you’ve got to put your team in the best position to win and make sure you have the right depth and the right compe ion. So, obviously, that factors into it.”

According to reports, Russell wants about $30 million in guaranteed money, which would be the most ever for a rookie.

Culpepper’s stint with the Miami Dolphins ended June 17 when he was released following the team’s decision to acquire former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Trent Green via trade.

Acquired from the Minnesota Vikings, Culpepper’s first season in South Beach was riddled by injuries, as he was limited to five games due to knee problems suffered while still in the “Twin Cities.” The former Central Florida standout underwent reconstructive surgery on the knee midway through the 2005 campaign.

Russell has not even signed yet, and Culpepper is suppose to help mold Russell. Culpepper is just an insurance plan and mentor at this point.

so why did they pick Russell again?
because it takes a year to look at the system
and raiders have 6 people looking at the contract and russel thinks he worth more then last year's number one draft pick
