Spurs Coyote a finalist for Mascot Hall of Fame
Mascot Hall of Fame balloting officially starts across the globe Monday. This year, the Spurs Coyote has been named one of the chosen finalists for induction with the Class of 2007. Voting continues until Sept. 6.
Fans can cast their vote at www.mascothalloffame.com
This year, the Coyote will be competing against six other mascots including Mr. Met (New York Mets), Hugo the Hornet (New Orleans Hornets), the Mariner Moose (Seattle Mariners), Youppi (former Montreal Expos and current Montreal Canadians) and the Oriole Bird (Baltimore Orioles).
If inducted, the Coyote will join the likes of the Phillie Phanatic, Phoenix Suns Gorilla, and Famous Chicken in the Mascot Hall of Fame.
The Coyote joined the Spurs in 1983 as the team's official mascot and has become one of the most recognizable mascots in professional sports. With over 1,200 games under his belt, the Spurs Coyote can proudly say he's never missed a game. In addition to his game performances, the Coyote makes over 400 appearances throughout the San Antonio community each year.
The 7-foot tall Coyote was named Mascot of the Year by gameops.com in 2005 and is known for his hilarious on-court skits and enthusiasm at every Spurs home game or events in which he performs.

This one is the same as the Dennis Rodman debate.
His numbers are good and all, but that ejection makes him a bad wolf. Is the committee really gonna allow a trouble making wolf in on the first ballot?
Pretty weak comp. Mr. Met is lame, and only famous because he's in New York. Hugo is pretty good, but who knows him outisde of the NBA? The Mariner Moose? Youppi? Sheesh. Oriole mascot is okay, but doesn't really do a whole of a lot. This year, the Coyote will be competing against six other mascots including Mr. Met (New York Mets), Hugo the Hornet (New Orleans Hornets), the Mariner Moose (Seattle Mariners), Youppi (former Montreal Expos and current Montreal Canadians) and the Oriole Bird (Baltimore Orioles).
whottt's going to cream his jeans.
Jess Kersey can induct him:
The wolf is in!!
Well, he may enter a Hall before the Admiral.
Looks like there's a little ballot stuffing going on ... LOL!
2007 Professional Ballot
7: Youppi
10: Mr. Met
4: Hugo The Hornet
263: The Coyote
3: The Mariner Moose
2: The Oriole Bird
289 total votes.
If it were up to me, I'd put Youppi in because he's the first mascot to completly switch sports (baseball to hockey). However, the Coyote still remains "The best in the business"!
The unique thing about the Coyote--at least the original Coyote--was not that he was funny, although he was, but how damn athletic he was in his performances.
He always pulled off stunts like rapelling down from the stadium ceiling that other mascots would never even attempt.
Since the Hornets were created in Charlotte they have had one guy play him at all of their games. That guy just retired this last season. He was one of the best mascots I've ever seen in my life and a true professional. He'd get my vote hands down over that compe ion.
Coyote(Tim Derk, especially) is deserving of this honour!![]()
That's cool. Good luck Coyote.![]()
Yay...
Why is the Spurs mascot a Coyote??![]()
Probably for the same reason that the Mariners' mascot is a moose; or, of course, for the same reason that the Suns' mascot is a gorilla.
Duh.
Youppi is also the first mascot to ever be ejected from a major league baseball game.
How anyone could leave Youppi out of the Hall of Fame is beyond me. A two-sport star with at least one significant first on his resume? That's the stuff of hall of fame inductions.
Why is the Mavs' mascot a guy in a leather thong with a whip?
The Coyote needs to get this a lot of work has gone into all the Coyote routines throughout the years.
Why on earth is the stupid Phoenix Gorrilla in the mascot hall of fame?
And before the Coyote?????????????????????????????
That makes absolutely no sense at all.
Gorrilla should not even be in the top ten of mascots, whereas the Coyote has always been deserving of that distinction!
Go figure!!!!!!!!!!
Just makes no sense whatsoever!
The Gorilla and the San Diego Chicken are the godfathers of all animal mascots. easily the top two of all time.
Coyote is like Tim Duncan, hands down in HOF
Hmmm. Until this thread, I didn't even know that there was a Mascot Hall of Fame...Whatever.
Go Coyote!![]()

the best NBA mascots I think are Spurs and suns. It is a tradegy if tim doesn't get in.
I can understand the Coyote being the Spurs mascot ... think cowboys and their spurs, being in the desert, which has coyotes ...
But I don't understand the gorilla with the Suns?
