SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Spurs announced today that they have hired Mo McHone as Director of Basketball Development for the Austin Toros.

"Mo McHone has a wealth of basketball knowledge," said Spurs General Manager RC Buford. "Over the last four decades he has coached in the NBA, the D-League and the CBA - as well as in college and internationally - so he has a great deal of basketball expertise at all levels. Putting together a D-League roster, and then managing that roster, is a difficult task. We feel that Mo's background and experience make him a perfect fit for this position."

Last season McHone led the Sioux Falls Skyforce to a 30-20 record before falling to the eventual D-League champion Dakota Wizards in the Eastern Conference Finals. He leaves Sioux Falls as the franchise's all-time winningest coach, posting a record of 172-102 (.628) over five seasons (one in the D-League and four in the Continental Basketball Association) including a CBA Championship in 1996. McHone originally joined Sioux Falls in 1995 and led three Skyforce teams to the CBA Finals.

McHone was the head coach for the Birmingham Bandits (1991-92), Fort Wayne Fury (1992-93) and Yakima Sun Kings (1993-95) prior to joining Sioux Falls. He has an overall CBA coaching record of 229-168 (.577), which includes back-to-back CBA Championships in 1995 (Yakima) and 1996 (Sioux Falls). He was a two-time winner of the CBA's Coach of the Year award, earning the honor in 1995 with Yakima and in 1997 when he led Sioux Falls to a 47-9 record, the fourth-best mark in league history.

McHone was Stan Albeck's assistant coach for San Antonio from 1980-83 and served as head coach of the Spurs for 31 games during the 1983-84 season. McHone has also been an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers (1979-80 and 1985-86), Detroit Pistons (1999-2001) and Los Angeles Clippers (2001-03).

McHone additionally spent 14 years as a college assistant, with stints at Florida State University (1970-78), University of Georgia (1978-79) and Bradley University (1986-91).

He also has had three stints as head coach for USA Basketball; the 1997 Tournament of Americas Team, the 1999 USA Men's Pan American Games Team and the 2005 USA Men's World Championship Qualifying Team. His teams won a gold medal (1997), a silver medal (1999) and the 2005 squad finished in fourth place and qualified the United States for the 2006 World Championship.

    Wikipedia is my friend:

He holds the rare distinction of being named Coach of the Year in both the NBA and the ABA.

He was the commissioner of the short lived National Basketball League in Canada in 1993-94.
    Interesting.

When asked one time in an interview how his name was pronounced, Nissalke famously replied, "Tom".

Nissalke is a radio analyst and talk-show host for the Jazz.

Yeah. Mo would be the man to implement the Spurs' system in the D-League.

I can't wait to see some Toros games this season. Should be a lot more fun now that the Spurs own the team.

Certainly not a Hall of Famer, but he did get a bit of a shaft from the Spurs. He was basically fired for being too much of a defensive coach and not playing uptempo. Hence, after a brief stint from Bob Bass, Doug Moe.

Yeah he did, i never cared for Bass. I think he wanted to run the team his own way.
