no link. i think it was david aldridge who reported it last night during the blazers game. he said malone talked with his wife and decided he would retire. personally im glad

I heard that on ESPN during the Jazz and Portland game. Jim said that he was going to retire.

he shouldn't even bother wasting his time.
Last night during Jazz-Blazers game, Jim Gray reported that he had a conversation with Larry Miller (Jazz owner) and that "Miller was pretty sure that Malone was going to retire". Nothing official, just Jim Gray needing to pull a "breaking news" moment and using third party as his "source".

For once Karl, Shaq, and I have something in common. I will kind of miss having someone to dislike like Karl, but I think he probably should have just rode off into the sunset with Stockton rather than lingering for another season. It was a dumb decision and really the only poor career decision in a rather long one. Unless that 1% rears its head and he winds up in Miami, then he'll have two poor career decisions under his belt.

I don't exactly consider Jim Gray or David Aldridge to be "connected." They both like to think they are, but what their sources say and what usually happens seem to be on opposite ends of the spectrum.

Malone To Possibly Sign With The Spurs? 12/13 -

The NY Times is reporting that Knicks' officials have stated: they expect Free Agent Forward Karl Malone to sign with the San Antonio Spurs. Malone coming off of knee surgery ruled out a return to the Lakers (ironically the team he choose over the Spurs 2 summers ago), after comments by Kobe Bryant have escalated into a verbal-media showdown.
Thomas recently called Malone to inquire about his available services, but was turned down, as Malone intends to sign with a contender, and the Spurs appear to be closing in on winning that race, which also includes the Heat (where he could reunite with former teammate Shaq), and the Timberwolves. Mailman could ring in San Antonio
People who know Karl Malone from his Utah days insist he was never going back to the Lakers at the start of 2005. So maybe Kobe Bryant did Malone a favor. Now, Malone has a legitimate excuse not to want to return to L.A.
"I didn't say he'd be a distraction," said Bryant, after basically saying that waiting for Malone was a distraction. "If I thought he was a distraction, I would have come out and said it."
Given Kobe's track record, that's highly unlikely. Anyway, with Kobe hanging a "No Vacancy" sign on Staples Center, Malone can now go where he really wants to end up his career: Playing for a chance to win his first le, in San Antonio.
One person who talked at length with Malone at John Stockton's retirement soiree in Salt Lake City a few weeks back reported that the Mailman confided, "I ain't playing for the Lakers and I ain't playing for Minnesota."
As long as his knee is fine, and he claims it is, Malone would be perfect for the Spurs, who need another big man. They continue to blow hot and cold with Rasho Nesterovic and consider Malone a better defender, tougher and more coachable than the high-maintenance Malik Rose.
Damnit.

Malone can help this team.
Malone is a rugged defender. He's the single reason that the Lakers developed a reasonable P&R defense in the playoffs. He brings at ude. He is possibly the greatest pick setter in the history of the game. Parker will flourish coming off Malone picks. People way underestimate the value a Malone circa beginning of 2003 season can bring to the Spurs.
Malone's single-coverage defense on Duncan for most of the playoff games was a major factor in the Spurs choking against LA last year.
Malone does the little things really well.
That's assuming that Malone will be that healthy again. But he should be able to point at his bicep after he makes a layup. That appeals to Ghost on both basketball and wrestling fan levels.
If you can get beyond the local hating on Karl, Ghost is right.

I think the Spurs can win the championship without Malone, but they currently suffer against strong, physical teams.
Malone is the enemy to many folks, I know, but he could fill a void where Horry and Rasho come up short and he is as savvy as they come. Is he healthy, though?
Hey, I know what we should do! While we're bringing back old-ass es to play PF and moving Duncan to center, why don't we call up Dennis Rodman? I'm sure he would play another season in San Antonio for the veteran's minimum if we asked him real nice like. , he might not even demand to start.
