I think an argument could be made that the Spurs were actually the best team "on paper" at the beginning of the 2006-2007 season. It really depends on how you analyze these things. Finley and Ginobili would both be full time starters on virtually any other team, for example.

Suns are the best team on paper. It's also an appropriate metaphor for how they play.

    Exactly.

And, their bench wasn't crap, it just wasn't used.

    PG: Barbosa
    SG: Rose
    SF: Jumaine Jones
    PF: Diaw
    C: Thomas

That's a pretty damn good bench. Had Rose and Jones been used properly, that is. Rose was coming off a 14 ppg season, Jones off one similar.

Granted, Rose was signed later on and Jones struggled with injuries early, but there were 40/50 games for them to be worked in - at a minimum - and yet neither were ever given the minutes.

The stupid coaching decisions by Pop from 2006 still chap my ass. I can't imagine how you feel. I watch the things D'Antoni does and it almost makes me giddy.

Toronto was the most improved, they went from almost at the bottom of the East and 27 wins to third seed and 47 wins.

Most disappointed I would say was the Heat, though the Mavs are very close. The Heat being the returning Champions were expected to at least get to the Eastern Finals, but their season got derailed almost from the start and they never came together, the Mavs at least provided their fans with something to see this past year.

Both teams were VERY disappointing in the playoffs (both out in the fitrst round), but I give the edge to the Heat as they disappointed all year long and the Mavs only disappointed in the playoffs.

Best on paper is close between the Rockets and, Suns and Mavs. Any team with T-Mac and Yao should be good every year, add Bonzi to the team and they should be scary good ... but thats on paper. The Mavs bring almost an entire roster of talented players ... But only Dirk is "Star quality". The Suns have a great starting five and wonderful sixth man, but then it starts to get a little thin. I'm giving the edge to the Rockets because of the two star players and adding Bonzi.

Phoenix will not win a le with D'Antoni coaching, IMHO. This is a GM/coach that tied up gajillions of dollars on guys he won't play. This factor had more impact on the playoffs than any suspensions.

I would have to say the most improved team in the NBA were the Golden State Warriors.

I wouldn't call Dallas a "disappointed" team. Going into the series, they had lost all three regular season meeting with Golden State, so Golden State were the favorites going into the series. They won 67 games, but in the playoffs everyone is 0-0 until you go out and play the game.

Phoenix bench was ty. You had no backup point guard, no backup power forward, no backup center....

wtf? when does reality set in with you tool bags?

dallas was the best team on paper and the biggest disappointment. Why? Cuz they one the regular season prize but didn't win the prize that counts.

The biggest improvement was definitely Utah.

Heat were playing with a hurt Dwayne Wade, and an uninspired cast. Mavs were playing for their pride with a healthy group of guys, and riding a 67 win season and were inspired after the previous year's finals. EVERYONE automatically booked the Mavs to be in the finals or conference finals...to have lost in 5 to an 8th seed the way they did was pretty bad...and disapointing. Last season was their golden opportunity to get the ring with this core. Now I dont think its possible no matter how many "wily" veterans they add to the mix.

The second part of my quote is the important part. The rest is academic.
