    Only in Texas....

Bill Nye, the harmless children's edu-tainer known as "The Science Guy," managed to offend a select group of adults in Waco, Texas at a presentation, when he suggested that the moon does not emit light, but instead reflects the light of the sun.

As even most elementary-school graduates know, the moon reflects the light of the sun but produces no light of its own.

But don't tell that to the good people of Waco, who were "visibly angered by what some perceived as irreverence," according to the Waco Tribune.

Nye was in town to participate in McLennan Community College's Distinguished Lecture Series. He gave two lectures on such unfunny and adult topics as global warming, Mars exploration, and energy consumption.

But nothing got people as riled as when he brought up Genesis 1:16, which reads: "God made two great lights -- the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars."

The lesser light, he pointed out, is not a light at all, but only a reflector.

At this point, several people in the audience stormed out in fury. One woman yelled "We believe in God!" and left with three children, thus ensuring that people across America would read about the incident and conclude that Waco is as nutty as they'd always suspected.

This story originally appeared in the Waco Tribune, but the newspaper has mysteriously pulled its story from the online version, presumably to avoid further embarassment.

I'm just glad Nye didn't try and bring up Global-warming.....

More ignorant Christians giving Chritianity a bad name...

I could research the word "light" in the Bible for hours. From the few minutes I spent thus far, there are several different Chaldean and Hewbrew words used for light. I found 17 unique original text words that are translated to light from the old testament.

Genesis 1-1 to Exodus 14:20 except for Genesis 1-16:

    אלך

    Pronounced

    ‘ôwr

    Genesis 1-16:

    ڊואלך

    Pronounced

    mâ’ôwr

These two forms seem common for sky oriented perspectives.

    From my concordance:

    Ref # meaning(s)
216 illumination, bright, clear, lightning, happiness, morning, sun (form used Gen to Exodus 14:20)
    217 flame, fire
    219 Luminousness, prosperity
    3313 shine, light, shew self
3974 luminous body, luminary, light as in element, brightness, cheerful, chandelier, bright, light (form used genesis 1:16)
    4237 a window, light
    5105 daylight
5117 only in 2 Samuel 17:12.. Not light! Means rest, or settle down.
    5216 glisten, candle, lamp
    5927 to ascend
6348 ??? To bubble up! Only in Zephaniah 3:4
7031 rapid, light, swiftly (light as in light weight I assume)
    7034 be light
    7043 to be light
    7052 insubstantial
    7136 to bring about
7837 dawn, spring, early light, whence riseth
