Why have a trade deadline when in fact, its no deadline at all?

The actual trading deadline is the end of this month.
The media just typically annoints the July 31st deadline (the non-waiver deadline) as the trading deadline because a) any deal can be made and b) they don't want to have to explain the waiver rules to you.
The Bosox were able to move Pena because none of the crappy teams wanted him enough to claim him on waivers.

He did have an awful awful April that year.
But he's always been a bit up and down offensive player - he even had a sub .700 OPS season in STL in what should have been one of his prime seasons (2001).
01 i believe was the year where he was in ahuge slump, and there were lots of trade rumors surrounding him.
The really hilarious one was that Red Sox fans were extremely disappointed with Alex Gonzalez at SS last year for.....
putting up the same kind of numbers that he has his entire career.
(In fact, it was slightly better than his career average year and each of his last 2 years with the Fish - even with less HRs)

Red Sox Nation definitely adds to a player's expectations, but it's unreasonable to say that they're the only explanation for a player's poor performance.
