New Rocket Scola leads Argentina past Puerto Rico
Associated Press
LAS VEGAS — Luis Scola had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead Argentina, which trailed by 14 points in the first half, to an 87-75 victory over Puerto Rico on Friday night in the opening round of the FIBA Americas tournament.
Scola, who has signed with the Rockets, was most of the offense early for Argentina (2-0), which fell behind 31-17 30 seconds into the second quarter. Scola scored the first five points in a 14-2 run that got Argentina within 35-33 with 1:31 left.
Argentina, playing without NBA regulars Manu Ginobili, Fabricio Oberto and Andres Nocioni from the team that won Olympic gold in 2004, started going inside and was able to take control by getting Puerto Rico's big players in foul trouble.
Carlos Delfino, who plays for the Toronto Raptors, added 15 points for Argentina, which was 20-for-28 from the free throw line while Puerto Rico was 14-for-16.
Larry Ayuso had 22 points for Puerto Rico (1-2), while Carlos Arroyo of the Orlando Magic added 20.
John Peter Ramos, Puerto Rico's 7-foot-2 center who played briefly for the Washington Wizards in 2004-05, had eight points and 12 rebounds, but he fouled out with 9:10 to play on a charging call. He injured his left leg on the play and had to be helped to the bench. There was no immediate update on his condition.
Richardo Sanchez, Ramos' backup, and forward Carmelo Lee both finished with four fouls.
Scola made two free throws with 4:11 left that gave Argentina its first lead, 52-51. Antonio Porta followed with a driving basket to cap a 9-0 run. Argentina went on to lead by as many as 15 points, the last time at 85-70 on a 3 by Delfino with 25 seconds left.
Puerto Rico got off to a great start from behind the 3-point line with Arroyo making three and Ayuso two in the opening quarter. Puerto Rico went cold after that, finishing 9-for-33 from beyond the arc — Arroyo 4-for-9 and Ayuso 3-for-10.
So we should have signed Ayuso.
hehe..thanks very much for the trade. Vspan for Scola
I LOVE THIS GAME
dude you should be happy scola would never play as a spur

22 points against D Leaguers.hehe..thanks very much for the trade. Vspan for Scola
Typical Rocket fan.
lol if scola was going to spurs u couldnt tell me spurs fans wouldnt be excited about scola while yet i see threads where yall are excited to get udoka i believe a former d-league'r
Scola rules. The Spurs ed up on this one and anyone who does not agree is frankly
dumb.![]()
Hopefully this no-rebounding-bad-at ude scrub that whottt and Bruno told us all about starts to emerge . . .
I'd have been excited about getting Scola, and most Spurs fans would have been excited to get him. He's a good guy and a good player. He is also a low post power forward who, while a good inside scorer and defensive rebounder, isn't a very good defender, and there's a pretty decent power forward on the team already. The reality is that he might not have fit into the Spurs' system, and Udoka addresses a specific need, in both position and specialty. I'd rather have Oberto, Udoka and Splitter. The sooner Mahinmi becomes NBA ready, the less that trade stings.

He's always played well in non-critical FIBA situations. I don't see how this is some kind of surprise.
I told you all,He was gonna do better once He leaves Tau,Scola was done wih Tau.Now that He finally made it to the NBA,He looks more motivated and focused on his game(PPG and RPG).
Too bad the spurs F.O didnt see it that way too.
Yes, you told us he was sandbagging at Tau.
I'm glad the Spurs F.O. saw it that way too.
whatever chump.
at the end of the day my boy is showing you all what Argentinians are made of.
Eat that now.
Argentinians are made of the same thing as any other human race. Do they have a 2nd stomach or something?
he had 6 rebounds the game before
lets see his rebounding numbers as a rocket
nope,just bigger balls,that´s all.![]()
We all know he plays well in FIBA. He could even play well in the NBA.
Not for the Spurs.
I am glad he's not a Spur -- I thought it would make you join a Rocketboard since your Spurfandom relies solely on the nationality of one or two of their players. In that respect, I can't wait until all the Argentinians are off the team and you can red-ass elsewhere.
Ginobili, Oberto, Nocioni, Scola.
What could have been.
In that case Scola should have no problem going against Dwight and Amare, right?
Matt Bonner!
9 Million!
Wooohoo!
So then basically you are saying that typical Rockets fans are the same as typical Spurs fans or something?
28 and 15
holy ..
![]()
Damn, chumpie wants me ouy of this board asap![]()
Nah, you only red-ass in drug and religion threads -- and I don't care much about either.
Great!
I'm off to pray and say no to drugs![]()
By the way, damn shame the Spurs could/would not sign Scola. I guess they preferred Oberto.
What Scola had, we didn't need. It would've been nice to get Chuck Hayes in return or something like that, but we're good.
