win rookie of the year for 2008-09 since hes not playing in this season or does having a contract make him inelegible? Or if in 2008-09 he plays in the all star rookie - sophmore game, is he a rookie or a sophmore?

He's already flaked out on the U.S. team this summer and now the Blazers for the 07-08 season.

What makes you think he's just going to come in and win ROTY?

From what I can remember, there was someone on the Spurs (Speedy CLaxton maybe?) Who was signed for the Sixers the year before but couldn't play any games because of injury.

I remember him still being eligible for ROY. (even though he didn't have a chance.)

of course not. he would not be a rookie. Rookie is someone who was drafted that year.

If O.J. can get arrested again, then I'm convinced anything is possible.

I think this is a great question that none of the talking heads at ESPN have even begun to address. I know that foreigners like Scola, etc. can play overseas for a long time even after a team has claimed their draft rights and then are eligible for the ROTY in their first season in the league (even if they're 31 yrs old).

Still, this begs the question: did their rookie status begin once they signed a contract or once they were on the active roster for an NBA team after the season began? Because on one hand, Oden would be an inactive rookie under contract this year, but on the other, he would just be like an international player and not a rookie until he actually plays in a game.

Imagine the irony if Durant won rookie of the year in 07-08 and then Oden won it in 08-09...

personally i think if oden is in a close race with anyone else, he would ultimately win because the voters would say how difficult it was to overcome an injury. "feel good" variables like that always matter when it comes to roy or mvp races, even though no one admits it.

Even if there is no specific rule, it only makes sense that Oden would be eligible for ROY for the 2008-09 NBA campaign. He would not have played one minute in the 2007-08 season. For all intents and purposes, he'd be a rookie next year. My guess is that he would be, though I have nothing to verify such an assertion.

Oden would be eligible for the 2008-09 Rookie of the Year. In the NBA, you are considered a rookie in the season in which you play your first NBA game. Oden missing a year due to injury puts him in the same situation as a guy who gets drafted and then plays in Europe.

Major League Baseball is different in that it has a more lenient definition of what a rookie is. If I remember correctly, a rookie in baseball is a player with less than 150 at bats, 50 innings pitched and 40 days on the major league level. For example, Hanley Ramirez was the Rookie of the Year for the National League last year even though he had played some with the Boston Red Sox the year before. But because he went into the season with less than 150 at bats, 50 innings pitched and 40 days at the major league level, he was still classified as a rookie.

In the NBA, your rookie season begins the first second you are on the court. If Oden were to have gotten injured on the jump ball of his opening game in the NBA and missed the season, that would still have been classified as his rookie season. But in the current situation in that he's missing the whole year, his official rookie season won't be until '08-09.

    Methinks you're thrice wrong.

    1999-2000: Elton Brand, Steve Francis

    1994-1005: Jason Kidd, Grant Hill

    1970-1971: Dave Cowens, Geoff Petrie

IIRC, didn't this happen to Luke Ridnour?

You mean a single draft that has produced 2 consecutive rookies of the year? I don't think that's ever happened. Bet you Stern employed Donaghy to fix Oden's injury and save the league.
