    Childress, Irvin, Popovich top Texas Sports Hall of Fame induction class

    Former Oilers and Texas A&M defensive end Ray Childress, former Dallas Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin, and San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich are among eight sports figures chosen for induction into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

    Childress was a five-time Pro Bowler with the Oilers and was an All-American at Rich-ardson Pearce and a two-time All-American at Texas A&M.

    Irvin, the Cowboys' career leader in receptions and receiving yards, was inducted this summer into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

    Popovich has won four NBA les in nine years with the Spurs.

    The others selected for induction in the Waco-based Texas Sports Hall of Fame:

    • Leta Andrews, girls basketball coach at Granbury High School. Andrews has 1,218 career wins, most of any high school girls basketball coach in the nation.

    • e s, former Texas Tech football coach. s, who took the team to six bowls, retired with the most career wins in the program's history.

    • Abner Haynes, former running back and returner at North Texas State. Haynes went on to set AFL records for touchdowns in a game, season and career.

    • Mike Modano, Dallas Stars center. Modano is a six-time NHL All-Star and the top American goal scorer in league history.

    • Jim Ray Smith, an All-America guard at Baylor. Smith played seven seasons with the Cleveland Browns and three with the Cowboys. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1986.
