I hear a lot of talk about how this has "got to be banned" next year, but how? How do you prevent a coach from calling a timeout before a play? How do you judge intent? What if he sees a formation he doesn't like and needs to call a timeout?

I think it will even out in the end. It's the en-vogue thing to do right now, but I wonder if after a while we'll see that it really doesn't make much of a difference.

    Thoughts?

It kind of is an advantage to the kicker. Even if you make it and have to do it again, at least you have the confindence of knowing you just made it. And if you miss it, then the other teams coach just looks like a toatal jackass for giving the kicker another shot.

That's what I've been thinking... I've never been a kicker so I don't know how it affects you physically, but I can't imagine it's a bad thing to have a "warm up" kick...

I really don't see that there is anything they can do to change it. Just part of the game that sucks and you have to deal with it.

I heard Tony Dungy say the same thing on ESPN earlier today, and I agree. It'll be funny when someone actually misses the kick after the opposing coach calls TO.

They could make it where a TO by the defense on the field goal team has to be blown dead by the official before the snap. If it isn't done before the snap, it never happened. They could make that the exception specifically for the field goal unit if they wanted to.

the coach couldn't call that specific timeout from the sideline before this season. they could repeal that addendum.

Um, they did, it happened to Janikowski (Oakland) at the start of the season, it's why other coaches are doing it now.

Pretty easy to stop it from happening, either:

    1. No more coaches calling timeouts

    2. If the snap on a kick is made simultaneous to the whistle, the play stands.

Umm, I'm talking about the FG that doesn't count.

Once this happens they will stop doing it as much.

    Classless move.

You couldn't manage the game time, leave it up to the kicker to decide the fate of the game.

the reason they are doing it, is because they changed the rule about the coaches calling timeout from the sideline. did anyone wonder why we haven't had this happen before?

I am taking a guess, and I believe they said this on the radio broadcast last night. Appearantly officials can review a play after the snap of the next play, however a coach cannot challenge a play after another play has been run. Again just a guess, but the rule probably says you cannot challenge a play after another play has been run, probably does not say official review.

No it doesn't, if you listen to the ref, he says "prior to the snap"
