If he does some more Jaw dropping plays, Spurs will have a new "!" player for this year.
James White! is gone.
Ian Mahinmi! is coming.![]()
Did anyone see Ian Mahinmi's awesome block on the Mavs Maurice Ager duirng preseason Game 1?
Ager makes an aggressive drive to the hoop off the wing. He takes off about halfway inside the paint and soars for a vicious dunk. Ian meets him at the rim. Balls goes one way, Ager goes to the floor. Mahinmi looks at him and plays resumes the other way. An absolutely AWESOME defensive play.
If anyone has a photo, it would be appreciated.

a shame that in today's day and age of digital and computers and slingboxing and youtubes and internets we can't even get a couple of seconds of footage from an NBA game.
Don't get me wrong, I think the defensive isn't only hot-blocks, or the offensive is a dunk. But I like Ian and I agree...![]()
We need a nickname for Mahinmi, don't we, though? Or am I slowpoke.jpg on this?
Purpose of a nickname is either give someone a due description (e.g. Flight White), or to pay due respect to someone and their place in history (e.g. The Admiral).
Mahinmi has no unique traits, yet. " Ian 'Torros Bound' Mahinmi " just doesn't have a good ring to it.
He is not a franchise player.
So I think "Mahinmi" or even the extended "Ian Mahinmi" works for now.
Ian "Pre-Season" Mahinmi.
It's a step up from Ian "Summer League" Mahinmi

I don't care if the kid hasn't done anything, we might have a winner.

i was right there at the aa center... after he did that play i immediately thought that he might earn a roster spot just because of that play... the mavs crowd got really silent with it and even worse after udoka's three right after that...
Perhaps there was a bit of motivation for Ian on this play. An excerpt from a previous article from 7/29/06:
http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/b...i.1759f2a.html
An Eastern Conference scout said Mahinmi looked how one would expect a 19-year-old to look — inconsistent. The scout liked that Mahinmi had active hands on defense. But he also thought Mahinmi was thinking too much — instead of reacting — when he received the ball in the post.
"He needs more development," the scout said. "But he will get better because he's not afraid."
Mahinmi proved that when Dallas' first-round pick, Maurice Ager, threw down a dunk so vicious it sent the Spurs forward staggering backward into a courtside table. The play brought the Mavericks — and most of the fans — to their feet, but Mahinmi looked unfazed. On the ensuing possession, he quickly called for the ball and drove inside to draw a foul. Spurs officials were merely happy Mahinmi tried to challenge Ager's dunk. In Europe, where the game is populated by jump shooters, he rarely gets the opportunity.
I'm sure Ian remembered that play when he met Ager at the rim during Monday's game. Call it the Mahinmi Redemption.
