Quincy Carter arrested on drug charges

Drug allegations against Quincy Carter resurfaced Friday in the way of a felony possession charge.

The former Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings quarterback, whose full name is Lavonya Quintelle Carter, 29, was booked into the Shreveport City Jail just before 4 a.m. on one count of second offense possession of marijuana.

He later was transferred to the Caddo Correctional Center, where bond had not been set Friday night.

A 911 caller told police a man at the Circle K convenience store at the corner of Youree Drive and Southfield Road in Broadmoor was selling drugs, police spokeswoman Kacee Hargrave said.

Police stopped Carter's vehicle, which matched the description the caller gave, at 1:20 a.m. a block north on Youree at the intersection at Leland Avenue, Hargrave said.

The responding officer said Carter smelled like alcohol and took him to the department's DWI unit for testing. He was not drunk but police found 1/10 ounce of marijuana in his pants pocket.

"We don't have any reason to believe he was selling drugs," Hargrave said about the former Georgia and Dallas Cowboys star.

Carter played for the Battle Wings during the 2007 season under a one-year contract with af2 — as all the league's players do — and completed his services and contractual obligations when his contract expired following the completion of the 2007 season in early August.

"I am saddened at the report of Quincy's arrest," Battle Wings owner Dan Newman said. "Our organization carefully created an environment during the 2007 season to give Quincy every opportunity to succeed — not just on the field, but off the field.

"Because of his NFL past and the stories surrounding his leaving the NFL, we felt like he deserved the chance like we all do to live through our mistakes and bad choices and try again. There are a lot of people in the Shreveport-Bossier community who opened their arms to Quincy Carter and gave him that opportunity. And I am eternally grateful for that. My prayers are with him as he deals with what occurs and wish him only the best."

Battle Wings coach Jon Norris was able to engineer an outstanding season in 2007 that saw the Battle Wings come up just one game short of the division championship.

"Quincy Carter was a key part of our success on the field this year," Norris said. "Our team was a close family. I told Quincy when he left Dallas and came to Shreveport-Bossier that he was leaving a large fish bowl in which he was a really big fish — Dallas — and even though our community is a much smaller fish bowl, he would still be watched closely by everybody.

"We knew he would have a lot of attention that would bring a lot of pressure. And we were right. But Quincy and his teammates worked hard with our staff, the front office, and people in this community to make 2007 a great year on and off the field for the Battle Wings and Quincy Carter. I hope this is just a setback and wish Quincy well as he moves on with his life."

I laughed when I was working and came across a story about him being in the af2. I mean, he wasn't even good enough to make an AFL squad, he had to be on what is essentially the AFL practice squad. And then he goes and s that up too. After this, who is going to hire him? He will have to pull a Juwanna Man and play for the WPFL.
