I admire his humility, but not his intelligence... why would you want to stay with that crappy-ass franchise? Was "Kevin McHale will be fired at the end of this year" in the fine print?

Jefferson gets $65M deal from Wolves, says he's not worth max

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Al Jefferson could have waited until next summer to sign a contract extension with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
In fact, that was what his agent advised him to do, hoping that a big season and his status as a restricted free agent would have brought the 22-year-old power forward the highest contract allowable under league rules.
Jefferson ignored that advice and signed a five-year, $65 million deal just before the deadline Wednesday night. In the era of "Show me the money!" and "bling bling," Jefferson's reason was stunningly humble.
"I didn't even think I was worth max (money) this year anyway," Jefferson said at a news conference Thursday. "I would've been a fool to go up there and ask for max, having not really proved myself for that. So the number I got was the number that was my goal from Day 1. And I think it was a win, win situation."
At an average salary of $13 million per season that starts next year, Jefferson certainly won't be starving. But Timberwolves vice president of basketball operations Kevin McHale said that had Jefferson signed a max deal, he would have been en led to 25 percent of Minnesota's salary cap.
Depending on where the cap is set in each of the next six years, Jefferson likely would have made more than $15 million per season.
"I can tell you around the league, 85 percent of the people feel they're worth max," McHale said with a chuckle. "Al's in the minority of 15 percent that doesn't believe he deserves max."
I admire his humility, but not his intelligence... why would you want to stay with that crappy-ass franchise? Was "Kevin McHale will be fired at the end of this year" in the fine print?
Yeah I agree, he's a good guy, but a fool for staying in Minnie
he aint worth $13 million a year either, but what pro athlete admits they aint worth the most money they can get?
Maybe the fact that he signed for less will let them build a team around him.
BIG if. Doubt it's gonna happen. But even then.
The article cannot be correct, though. $15 million a season is nowhere near the cap, is it?
Too bad Lary Hughes didn't say that a couple years ago. The guy is getting away with a slow robbery.
At least now the Wolves can suck without its franchise player taking up 35-40% of the salary cap.
I don't look for the Wolves to attract big name free agents. They'll use that money for their young guys when it's time to re-up.
did Mchale put Big Al on some kind of drug in order to say he is not worth the max and sign his contract
5 years and $65 mil is about right. If you couple his production and potential along with his position then it seems fair to me. The kids only just turned 22 years old and has already put up a 17-11 season... he has the potential to be a 20-10 guy for along time.
Randy Foye looks like a player also, he showed promise toward the end of last season and he can break down defences to get his own shot or set up team mates ala D-Wade, albeit it a poor man's Wade. Steady jump shot and knows how to play.
Could there be a more perfect fit for the Spurs than Corey Brewer? If he can develop some handles and a consistent stroke he has all-star potential and can be a lock down defender.
If they can get a good point guard who can run the offense and allow Foye to play off the ball some then this team will be fine. They will have some good picks in the next draft or two.
Their future aint that bad.. but the weather does suck.
Just because he signed that contract doesn't mean that he'll stay in Minny for the duration. With McHale running the club, you just never know.
If he did, it might be the second best move he ever made as Wolves GM.
Gulp
Jefferson > Duncan in being generous during deals.
Duncan >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >> Jefferson in accomplishments to earn that pay.
Didn't Duncan recently agree to an extension where he takes a paycut to allow the Spurs more flexibility cap-wise in a few years?
At least that is what TNT reported during the Portland game on Tuesday.
