Youtube kicks me offline, so I can't watch the video. But I did see that was 'Its so easy' by GNR.

Uhm.. Is it a recent recording of it? Cuz the original with slash on appe e for destruction was an awesome song.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "today", but there were thousands of crappy rock bands in the 70s and 80s too. They just didn't have access to the kind of media we have now, so you never heard from them.

This generation has produced it's own great talent. System of a Down, Disturbed, RHCP, Alice in Chains, Greenday, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, etc. The mid-90s saw the rise of Nirvana and Pearl Jam. The rest just haven't had time to establish themselves as legendary yet.

In today's world, for every System of a Down there are 40 Good Charolettes, My Chemical head and a stable full of Emo punks with no musical talent and a singer who couldnt hold the jockstrap of some whiney rocker like Warrant.

Today's rock is as bad, if not worse, than any rap out there. Soldier Boy and Good Charolette rockin tour of Emo Gangsters.

the thread le is the truth, but it kinda kills the argument when you show a Guns N Roses clip to show how much better rock used to be.

Eh, they had one great album and fell off. It sucks that they couldn't stay off the smack and keep it together.

And I recall back in the 80s, there were garage bands that barely had equipment to play. , half of them didn't even know all the major chords on a guitar. They just made a of a lot of noise and called it "metal". Do you really think they are superior to the bands you listed? "Yeah, we needed a cymbal so we used the top of that trash can." Metal indeed.

I see what you're saying, but if you'll note the new Guitar Hero III game has plenty of songs from this generation as well as those in the past. As time passes, you only tend to remember the greats. The averages fade from memory and the horrible experiences are suppressed.

It might also be noted that the expansion of music has caused it to lose a bit of the culture it once had. EVERYONE in the 60s listened to the same groups. Loved the same groups. That trend carried even into the 80s with Metallica and the like.

Today, music is branching out a lot. So it must appeal to a wider variety of tastes. This diversity will inevitably bring about the ire of those who remember the days when there were only a few great metal bands to choose from. I am not attempting to assert superiority here, just stating that today's music does have a number of fantastic acts.

are you serious with that statement? Disturbed "great"
Radiohead, White Stripes, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and you might make a case for RATM and the Chillis but everything else is a reach

Ah yes, nothing like someone who purports their own tastes to be superior.

Personally I love Disturbed. It's great music to work out to. You're going to tell me that all of the metal bands of the 80s (especially the love ballads) are so much better? Complete with the atrociously cheesy lyrics? That 80s syntha-pop.. man, that's where it's at for music!

I'm not putting my taste into it, I own a Disturbed album, they are just not a "great" band. They are alright, but for the most part they are repetative and their style isn't influential at all. 10 years from now they won't be around, that's what I'm saying. Deftones are more "great" than Disturbed will ever be. And I don't like 80's music other than U2 so I don't know who your trying to argue with. I'll bet you 1000 bucks that if you had any credible music writer to list the 500 best bands of all time, Disturbed doesn't even sniff the top 500. Disturbed is just a band, they make catchy rock songs, but they don't do anything other than that...see Nickelback and Linkin Park.

I've never understood all the love GnR got, but I tend to like heavier stuff so my opinion of them is that they are similar to many other 80's rock groups.

Axl Rose's voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me. High pitched and whiny.

    2nd.

These threads mildly amuse but ultimately fall flat because good music is what matters regardless of genre.
Today I've listened to everything from Aerosmith Toys in The Attic, ZZ Top's first and Tejas, Radiohead Pablo Honey and In Rainbows, Unkle Psyence Fiction, QOTSA and Kyuss, Praxis, Texas Tornadoes, Silversun Pickups, KMFDM, Fugazi...etc.

It's like saying RED kicks ass, and everything else is just pink.
    Well okay, whatever.

My point wasn't to loft Disturbed onto a pedestal or proclaim them as an all-time great band unto themselves. The OP in the thread made a vast generalization and I was refuting that with the bands I was listening to that are all pretty decent in their own right.

And you're probably right. Disturbed isn't going to be a legendary band. But they're still among my favorite to work out to -- and that counts for something.
