A cavity should be filled at the earliest before it can cause any major damage. If you develop any blackened spots on your teeth or if it gets sensitive to sweets and to temperature changes, then it is likely that you are in the first stages of tooth decay. Once a small cavity is formed then food particles gets collected in them resulting in a bigger cavity due to undermining of the tooth enamel. The tooth should be restored immediately with a filling material after the entire carious lesion has been removed. There are many types of filling materials, but for permanent fillings, two commonly used filling materials are --- Amalgam and Composite.

Resin dental fillings were created as an alternative to traditional metal dental fillings. Tooth fillings colored to look like a natural tooth are known as Resin filling, are made of a plastic dental resin. Resin Dental Fillings are strong, durable, and make for a very natural looking smile. Many dental insurance plans cover their use. Most of us have had amalgam fillings (silver) or gold filling restorations. Some amalgam fillings were what we have called mercury fillings, as some amalgam fillings contained mercury. Metal fillings were effective, but very con uous and tended to blacken in color over time.
    How Are They Placed?

The decayed portions of the tooth must be removed which leaves a hole that needs to be filled to restore the tooth to its original form and function. The tooth is prepared and etched with a mild acid solution. Then the composite is placed in layers, using a light specialized to harden each layer. When the process is done the filling will be shaped to fit the tooth. This filling is than polished to prevent staining and early wear.

    Home Care
Use a neutral sodium fluoride because stannous fluorides can be detrimental or negative effect on composite resins and ceramics. Use a soft toothbrush or electric toothbrush twice a day. Floss once a day, before bedtime is the best time to floss. Use non-abrasive toothpaste like original Crest or Colgate. Avoid "extra whitening" or "whitening" toothpaste. This toothpaste often is very abrasive and can scratch restorations. Drink tea, coffee or coke through a straw to avoid staining this material. Alcohol rinses may affect the longevity of a restoration.
