The Los Angeles Angels, who have been trying to land another strong hitter for several years, agreed to a five-year, $90 million deal Wednesday with free agent Torii Hunter, who hit .297 with 28 homers and drove in 107 runs for Minnesota this year.

An outfield of Vlad, Hunter and Matthews Jr. is probably the best defensive outfield in all of baseball.

Word is they are still going after Miguel Cabrera as well.

Wow. Is it just me or did the Angels wrangle themselves a bargain?

I don't think 90 mil for a guy who will be 37 and is really only just-above average is a bargain. He will be great for a year or two but the last few years of that contract will be an albatross, kinda like Gary Matthews Jr already is after only one year on his $50 mil contract.

They didnt learn with GMJ about signing older guys too high after a career year. And what's worse, Hunter had a line of .287/.334/.505 last year, his best ever. If you are going to pay 90 mil, that seems like a weak line for a guy who is really just-above average on defense.

Anyhoo, I hope the rumor of the Rangers being able to trade for Crisp is true. He is younger, better defensively and doesn't cost nearly as much. I wanted Crisp from the beginning.

I meant it more that I thought he'd get a lot more.

But yeah, I'm glad the Braves didn't pay for him like that.

    Now, Atlanta... go get...

As soon as I heard he was dining with Tom Hicks, I knew one of two things was going to happen. Either 1) he wasn't coming to Texas, or 2) He was signing with the Rangers for 10 years, $250 million.

Geez... It's far-fetched, but possible to imagine the Angels netting both Miggy and Tejada. Matthews, Wood, and a mid-level prospect to Baltimore for Tejada, with Santana, Kendrick, mid-level prospect or minor league catcher to Florida for Miggy.

    Figgins
    Tejada
    Vlad
    Miggy
    Anderson
    Hunter

    That's sick!
It's probably not going to happen, largely because they'd empty their system to make it happen, but if they did, they'd be in great shape to win the World Series for the next three seasons.

To get the Orioles to both give up Tejada AND take Matthews' contract off your hands, you'd have to make it something like Matthews/Wood/Adenhart/Willits.

= Wood + Willits for Miggy and Adenhart to offset taking Matthews' ridiculous contract off your hands.

Contrary to what Sportscenter may tell you, Matthews is not a great defensive OF (even if he has made the 2nd greatest catch of my lifetime) and both Hunter and Vlad are closer to mediocre than they are the top of the league.

yeah there are at least 10 guys better defensively than Matthews.
hunter is better but getting old. Vlad is average with a sniper rifle for an arm.
