Serious question as I haven't seen one non-Spurs game of theirs this year, so basically I've only see them play balls out great. Why are they losing to some suck ass teams?

The Mavs won't be judged by the regular season. I won't be surprised if they win no more then 50-55 games. I think they will sleepwalk through the season and turn it on in April.

Now I don't feel too bad about losing two in a row to the Bucks and Celtics.

at least for tonite, foul/free throw disparity ... otherwise it probably would have been a Dallas win. i didn't watch the game, but i was looking at the box scores. so, that's just a guess. i don't know how the game really went that made it gave the bucks the edge.

They aren't a championship team that can afford to do that. They don't have that kind of experience, and given the high level of choking I can't believe they would try something like that. I doubt it would work for them.

the problem is dirk is not like ray allen
he can not hit late clutch shots

I would trade kobe for dirk straight up if I am gm of mavs

Lakers wouldn't take that trade. Lamar for Dirk though.

dirk's anti-clutch pedigree is grossly exaggerated.

Maybe time will tell. Personally I don't buy this on/off switch mentality some teams have. Look at Miami last season they messed around in the regular season and look what happen to them in the playoffs. They ended thier season like they started losing to the Bulls.

Wade was injured and that Miami team was hopeless without Wade at 100%. It was like the Spurs in 2000 when TD was injured and out against the Suns in the 1st round.

I dont see anything wrong with the mavs besides whats always been "wrong" for them. It's obvious they're not playing at a high level right now, there were many games last season where I thought they were lucky to win. Maybe we all expect them to be the dominant 67 win team of last season but its obvious they're not going for that route anymore. So far Dirk has been reduced to a role player and their defense has been pathetic.

Nah. Avery is probably going the Pop route. He is taking it easy.

They would also like to turn it on after the All-star break. Would if work? Time will tell.

None of the teams I've seen the Mavs play this year are as bad as the Spurs team that showed up in the first half against them. None. The Mavs are back to their jump shooting ways, which is great when the jumpers go in, and makes for big comebacks when they start jacking them up in desperation. Devin Harris has extended his range, which makes him less of a liability until he starts shooting instead of driving. Josh Howard is getting better and better, but they are still emotionally fragile, as the Milwaukee game can attest. If they get their defense together and score inside, and if the refs continue to allow them to commit 25 moving picks per game, they'll be competing for the division again.

If you want a free throw stat that made a difference, look at the Mavs' percentage. Missing seven free throws almost never happens for them, and they lost by 2.

Something is definitely off. Missing free throws, not attacking the basket, wide open lanes for layups, Dirk passing wide open shots, lingering injury issues...they seem totally out of sync right now.

i just think that they learned from last year and arent trying to get an amazing regular season record. i dont think that they would lose regular season games on purpose but they know that it is guaranteed that they will make the playoffs barring some injury. they probly are taking a page out of the spurs book and trying to get hot at the right time

Trying to get hot at the right time never means being able to take games off or not to give effort.

Mavs know what they do in the regular season doesn't mean . Nobody cares if they lose to the Pacers in November.

If they choke in the playoffs this year for a second time in a row, though, then it'll be time to make some changes.

I agree no one will remember the loss to the Bucks/Pacers if the Mavs win it all.

    1. Interior Defense sucks right now. Too many uncontested layups and dunks by other teams. Dampier isn't 100% healthy or playing heavy minutes, so Dirk is getting more minutes at the five. Not good.

    2. Playing up and down to the compe ion. Nice wins over San Antonio and Houston. Disappointing losses to Milwaukee, Cleveland and Atlanta. We're 3-4 on the road. Elite teams post winning road records.

    3. Avery is trying to overhaul the offense after the GS series, and it's a work in progress. He's trying to emphasis Dirk becoming a better passer and not trying to do it all himself. I think early on the results have been mixed. His passes out of double teams are better, he anticipates where the blind-side help defender is coming from better, but I think sometimes he passes up shots he would normally take (and make) in order to be more of a creator for others.

    4. Settling for too many jumpers instead of attacking the basket. They started off both games against Milwaukee and Indiana cold from outside and only reluctantly started going to the basket more and getting hacked and earning trips after the jumpers weren't falling. They need to mix it up more.

    5. I'm not sure about the FTs. I have to figure that is an anomaly that will eventually correct itself on its own.

Keep in mind that for all that is "wrong" with the Mavericks, we're on a pace to win 55 games. But the defense needs fixing if we want to be anything other than early-round fodder.

I thought Diop was a good interior defender? What's wrong with him?
