Tampa, Florida - Debra Lafave was arrested in Tampa today for violating her probation. The violation listed says she talked to a female coworker who was 17 years old on various occasions.
The former Tampa teacher was accused of having sex with a 14-year-old middle school student. Part of her agreement included that she not have any contact with minors.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says she was in violation of Condition 69 of her probation, which states she cannot discuss "Non-work related issues such as family problems, friends, high school, personal life, boyfriend issues and sexual issues" with minors.
The manager at the restaurant where Lafave had worked at says he was surprised at the arrest, as she had been a model employee. Lafave herself appeared to be in disbelief as she was charged today.
The former Greco Middle School teacher was arrested in June 2004 in front of the student's Temple Terrace home. She was married at the time, and two months later her husband Owen filed for divorce.
In December 2004, investigators released audio and video tapes of Lafave with the 14-year-old. The video tapes showed her, the victim and his cousin in an Ocala store. In November 2005, Lafave accepted a plea deal in Hillsborough County, guilty to two counts of lewd and lascivious in exchange for three years community control.
Later she took a similar deal in Marion County, where the sexual incidents took place.
Debra Lafave is now serving three years' house arrest.
Lafave says she suffers from bipolar illness.

wow, this chick is working at a restaurant now?! that's crazy. i'm not knocking people that do, but going from a married teacher to a divorced, house arrested, out-of-work waitress in a span of 3 years is some fall. decisions decisions, people.

What we have here is the downside of having to be impartial. I can understand if a 14 year old girl was raped by a dude. I doubt that 14 year old dude was raped by this chick. I'd bet the house he went willingly.

Seriously, while she technically was in violation of the terms of the probation, this sounds a bit harsh.
I saw her on the news walking with her attorney. She was wearing a super tight fitting top. That chick has some SERIOUS rackage going on.

While I get your point here, I agree with Shoog. The difference between the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. Chatting with a 17 year old female coworker is not what that condition of her probation is about.
Additionally (not directed at the quote above), you sort of have to make up your mind - either all adults having sex with children under 18 are predators or they aren't. There are plenty of teenage girls that willingly have sex with older men, and we still consider the older men predators. Either they are the same thing or we need to let everyone who had consensual sex with a minor free. We won't, because as responsible adults we understand that it can be very damaging to be in a position where you are in a sexual relationship with an adult and that the adults are the ones who are supposed to be smart enough not to go there.
And yes, this can be damaging for a young man, despite the jokes abounding about the men here who wish they could have ed a hot teacher. There is a lot that is messed up in a situation where an adult goes after a child, particularly during the really troubling time of adolescence. Proof? Look at Mary Kay LeTourneau's husband/victim and what's become of him. One messed up kid.
