Texas Southern, Texas Tech put on probation by accrediting group

Texas Southern University and Texas Tech University have been placed on probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, a regional accrediting organization, officials said Wednesday.

Texas Southern, a historically black university in Houston that has struggled with allegations of financial mismanagement, was placed on probation by the accrediting group because of its poor financial picture.

Texas Tech was put on probation for failing to show that its curriculum met college-level competencies, according to the organization, which issued the probations during an annual meeting Tuesday in New Orleans.

Glenn Lewis, chairman of Texas Southern's governing board, said the commission's action was not a surprise. The accrediting agency had launched an unscheduled probe into the school's finances, leadership and management controls in August, the Houston Chronicle reported in its online edition Wednesday.

"While I'm concerned, I'm confident that we can do whatever needs to done," Lewis told the newspaper.

Texas Southern has a year to rectify the problems.

Tech spokeswoman Margaret Lutherer said the Lubbock university put a program in place last year to make the assessments of its curriculum. She said the probation was issued simply because Tech did not have the results ready in time for the association's meeting.

Lutherer said the school expects to have the results ready by the end of the spring semester.

Commission president Belle Wheelan said in a story for Wednesday's online edition of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal that she believed Tech would come into compliance within the year.

"It's going to take a lot of work, but I have faith in them," she said.

Tech is accredited by more than 25 agencies in a variety of academic programs.

A loss of accreditation could prevent a school from participating in federal financial-aid programs.
