Can things get much worse in Miami?

    Mourning tears patellar tendon

ATLANTA (AP) -- Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning tore the patellar tendon in his right knee Wednesday night against the Hawks, an injury that could end his career.

Miami spokesman Michael Lissack said an examination at Philips Arena, including X-rays, revealed the injury. Lissack said it wasn't immediately known if the injury could end the season for the 37-year-old Mourning, who has said there is "zero chance" he will return next year.

Injuries like this typically take at least three months to heal.

Mourning is in his 15th year in the NBA, including 11 seasons with Miami.

Mourning was hurt when attempting to defend the basket on a layup by Atlanta's Mario West.

Replays showed Mourning's knee buckled without contact from West as Mourning was about to jump.

With Mourning laying on his back clutching his knee, a stretcher was brought to his side. Mourning was placed on the stretcher and then sat up, rose to his feet and limped to the Miami bench with the assistance of teammates.

At this point, yes - they could finish 9th in the east and not even get a decent pick out of this debacle of a season.

Couldn't have happened to a douchier guy. That said, best wishes on a speedy recovery. Maybe he won't resort to HGH this time.

Yeah, I feel the same way. What's that D-Wade? You're on a team going nowhere stuck in salary cap ? Suck it up crybaby.

Alonzo Mourning is just a huge tool. Do you enjoy the muscle poses and the fistpumps after routine plays, like when the Heat successfully inbound the ball? Alonzo Mourning is worse than the Baltimore Ravens. Those fools might've beaten the Patriots if they hadn't tried to reenact Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo after every play.

Maybe now that Alonzo is forced to retire, Rod Thorn can sign him to a one-day contract to kiss his ass. I don't wish injuries on anybody, but like mono said, this one won't be keeping me up at night.

Mourning, along with Wade is serious about being a winning team again. He gives his full effort each and every night.. sad to see him miss at least some months on his final year.

Yeah, they really whipped us -- three wins by a grand total of 6 points. What can I say, we were no match for Alonzo's HGH boost and Wade's unstoppable 20+ FTAs per game. There's a reason why people say we choked, because nobody wants to give the Heat credit for being the better team.

I wish him the best. It sucks to see a great player like Zo go out like that. I know he means alot to the Heat and thier fans. I always enjoyed watching him play. He played every game like it was a playoff game even in the preseason. Terrible end to a Hall of fame career.

He'll live. Time to retire. No tears for a guy who has always been a head. I hope he recovers fine and don't wish pain or ill side effects from the injury, but I don't have much sympathy for him. He should have retired two years ago. And, when you're in your mid 30s and a role player, stop flexing after dunking and making a blocked shot. Have fun in retirement, dude. You were a major on the basketball court.

Whatever fans of every team would love to have a Zo on thier team. I know I would love to have him on Suns roster. He can still play even the Spurs went after him after the Heat's le run.

Do you even know who he is as person? Do you know every year at Thanksgiving he goes to the poor neighborhoods in Miami and hands out over 300 meals including turkeys to families who can't afford it. Just becuase he was part of the team that elminated the Mavs in the Finals does not make him a . You don't see me going around calling Duncan a . Besides I can think of worse players like Rasheed with his antics on the court.

I'm really touched that a millionaire who makes his money playing basketball found the time to give out some turkeys. 300 of em.

What's that Chris Rock skit about bragging about what you're supposed to do?

Anyways, lots of these charity acts are mandatory things the team makes them do. You think Steve Nash really wants to go read stupid books to re ed kids?

I thought it was a universally accepted truth that Alonzo is an ass on the basketball court. I'm not a Mavs fan, but I believe that. It doesn't mean he isn't a nice guy off the court (I don't know whether he is or not) and it doesn't mean he doesn't play hard or passionately. And, it doesn't mean he hasn't been pretty tough to come back from his kidney illness. It's just that he's a ing head on the basketball court. He should have stopped flexing about 8 years ago.

Considering he gave his word to sign with Dallas, called it a done deal, and then lied & signed with New Jersey instead, I can see why Mavs fans don't like him. I find it a bit too convenient (and quite hilarious at the same time) that every ignorant soul who didn't know that bit of data thinks Mav fans hate him for being a role player on a team that beat us in the Finals.
