Despite some initial resistance from ownership, San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Nolan has hired Mike Martz as his offensive coordinator, according to his agent, Bob LaMont.
Martz, offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions for the past two years, agreed to a two-year deal with the 49ers. The reason for a two-year contract is that it coincides with the remaining length of Nolan's deal in San Francisco. The two coaches worked together when they were with the Washington Redskins.
Nolan interviewed former Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey late last week and was planning on visits from former Dolphins head coach Cam Cameron and former Ravens coach Brian Billick.
Martz visited Monday and was offered a contract Tuesday morning.

So Alex Smith get a bump up FF wise?? or will they bring in a new QB?
He already said Gore is the main key in the offense.
Best WR is a TE and the QB is medicore, at best. And Smith is going to take a beating because Martz's protection schemes are a joke.
Bad hire.
Martz may have said that Gore is the center piece but you can't ignore History. He underutized Faulk in the superbowl despite the fact that he was arguably the best player in the NFL at the time. He did the same in Detroit, when throwing the ball obviously wasn't working he still did not like to run the ball. Even after jones had a good game running the ball and the Lions would win he would go back to throwing the damn ball. At least the lions have decent receivers.
Holy crap this is a horrible hire. The 49ers might be the absolute worst fit for Martz. No wide receivers, a tight end he won't use and a power rusher he won't give the rock to? This is going to be a disaster.
I didn't even mention Alex Smith, who might be the worst number one draft pick in NFL history. My favorite Alex Smith story was how the 49ers didn't figure out until after the draft that Smith has midget hands which make it difficult for him to grip a football.
