Chargers' Kaeding kicked for five games with broken plant leg

    Jan. 25, 2008

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding played in nearly five full games with a fractured lower left leg, including hitting four field goals in Sunday's loss to New England in the AFC Championship Game.

A person familiar with the situation confirmed the injury to the Associated Press on Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team hasn't acknowledged the extent of the injury.

Kaeding's left leg is his plant leg.

It is another example of how the team either hid injuries or gave conflicting information in the closing weeks of the season and the playoffs.

Kaeding was hurt helping to make the tackle on the opening kickoff of San Diego's home win over the Denver Broncos on Dec. 24. The team described it as a bruise. While saying the injury could be similiar to the broken fibula sustained by fullback Lorenzo Neal two weeks earlier, the Chargers never used the word "fracture" in describing Kaeding's injury.

Kaeding continued to kick field goals and PATs, but the Chargers signed kickoff specialist Dave Rayner two days before the regular-season finale at Oakland.

Rayner was not active for the AFC championship game, when Kaeding provided all of San Diego's points in the 21-12 loss to the perfect Patriots.

Kaeding couldn't be reached for comment on Friday. Coach Norv Turner and general manager A.J. Smith didn't return phone calls seeking comment.

"I don't talk about injuries at all," team trainer James Collins said when reached by phone.

Quarterback Philip Rivers played the AFC championship game with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, an injury he didn't confirm until after the game.

On Monday, Rivers confirmed that he had arthroscopic surgery a week earlier to remove damaged cartilage from the knee, which he injured in a 28-24 upset over the Indianapolis Colts in the divisional round. Rivers said having that surgery was the only way he could play in the AFC le game.

Rivers had reconstructive surgery on Wednesday and faces up to six months of rehab.

LaDainian Tomlinson, the two-time NFL rushing champion, reinjured his sprained left knee on the first play from scrimmage against the Patriots. He didn't play again after the Chargers' second possession.

TheSanityAnnex - it's easier to kick with a broken leg than to run on a bruised knee.

And as Mr. Charger Fan.. you would know that Keading does not normally handle the kickoff duties in the playoffs that was going to Dave Rayner.. In fact that was Dave Rayner was only inactive in the AFC Championship game due to the injuries. If LT would have just said he could not go then maybe your kickoffs would have been better.

I'm still thinking there was more to LT's injury that they let on. It had to be a risk that he would sustain permanent damage or something if he continued to play on it. I just can't see him NOT wanting to play in that game. That is what us Baltimore fans have been saying about that pussy Todd Heap all season. All his injuries when they first occur are "suppossed" to be a week. The sucker normally ends up missing the whole, or half of the freakin season.

Kaeding does not normally handle the kicking duties in the playoffs? Think about how stupid that statement makes you look considering Rayner was picked up midseason and Kaeding has always handled "playoff" kicking responsibilities. Mr. Football

I thought greenroom's post was pretty dumb, but contending that perhaps the Patriots might not have scored if they were given worse field position is on the cusp of dumbness as well.

Here we go again. I did not say Kicking Duites I said Kick off Duties...Since that was your orignal thought that the Chargers lost because of Keadings weak kickoffs.. Next time read the message.
But yes this is really stupid

My original thought was that Kaeding's hurt leg obviously affected his kicking abilities, which is why I pointed out his weak kickoffs. Find me a quote where I say the Chargers lost because of his kickoffs.

You said Kaeding does not normally handle kickoff duties, which leads me to believe you thought Rayner handled kickoff duties in the playoffs previously, which he never did, because he was never on the team. Next time, make your message a little more clear.

And anyone who thinks starting at the 38 yard line every time didn't help the Patriots is foolish.

So you'd rather have had Kaeding sit that one out? Odd, considering he was responsible for all of your points.

Yeah that game was really ten times better than another Pats vs Colts AFC championship. Chargers couldn't find the end zone for and they picked off Brady three times. Which is a big thing considering he only threw 8 picks in the regular season.

The Chargers found the endzone enough times against the Colts.

It's a damn shame they don't give out trophies for winning a divisional playoff game, isn't it?

All of those fieldgoals were gimmes. If one of those had been of decent yardage or had the game on the line, no way would I want Kaeding kicking it. His playoff fieldgoal percentage was terrible up until this game.

Just pointing out that if you wanted to see another "epic" game between the Pats/Colts, the Chargers aren't to blame.
