If they barely squeak by the Giants do they still get #1? The teams at the top pretty much dominated the Super Bowl.
None of the Patriots teams have really dominated the Super Bowl. Other NFL dynasties had at least one Super Bowl when they kicked their opponent in the balls in the big game. So far New England's most impressive Super Bowl victory is Super Bowl XXXVI simply because they were not supposed to win that game, much the same way the Broncos were not supposed to win Super Bowl XXXII. So this is New England's chance to leave no doubt that they are a great team, or be on the wrong side of the greatest upset in NFL history.
The 1972 Dolphins didn't beat a playoff team in the regular season and their three playoff wins were all won by a touchdown or less. Yet, because they ran the table, they were always considered among the best teams ever if not the best.
The Pats don't need to blow out the Giants to leave no doubt that they are a great team. They don't even need to win the Superbowl to leave no doubt that they are a great team. They're a great team already. If they win this Superbowl, no matter the score, they will be the greatest Superbowl champions in the history of the NFL.
85 Bears are #1
92 Cowboys are #2
89 Niners #3
Putting the Steelers or Dolphins ahead of any of those 3 is ing re ed.
If the Pats win they jump to #1, but I am a bit biased about that one.
But still, they beat 7 of the 12 playoff teams, some of them twice. So the "weak record" excuse is nonexistent with them.
I would agree with you....
you are biased.
But I would also agree with you about the Pats.
Yes, the 1978 Steelers are remembered for their whopping 4-point blowout in the Super Bowl.
Not only that...Jackie Smith dropped that pass in the end zone that could have won the game for the Cowboys...if I remember correctly.
You are correct.![]()

It's slightly different -- the Cowboys were down 35-17 in the middle of the 4th quarter, but got 2 scores in the 4th (including a touchdown with 22 seconds left) to get the score to 35-31.
After Jackie Smith's drop, Rafael Septien kicked a FG, too. So, even if Smith catches that pass AND the Cowboys put up 2 late scores, the best the Cowboys get in that situation is a tie at 35-35.
I still think the '92 Cowboys are one of the most underrated teams of all-time. Had that team not been ravaged by unrestricted free agency (once free agency began in 1989, teams could protect up to 37 players each year and had an opportunity to resign any protected player who was offered a deal by another club; after 1993, most free agents were unrestricted) it likely would have won several more Super Bowls. As it was, I still think that '92 club was among the deepest and most talented teams in NFL history and they proved it with a decisive win in SF during the playoffs and a crushing win over the Bills in the Super Bowl.
