Jeff McDonald: Matt Bonner Night in Canada
TORONTO -- The most famous patron of Toronto subway system is back in his old stomping grounds tonight in Toronto. Matt Bonner, is indeed, living it up.
Bonner only spent two seasons with the Raptors from 2004 to 2006, but became a sort of folk hero here due to his everyman lifestyle. He ate McDonald's. He refused to own a car. Like most people in this city, he took the subway, even borrowing his nickname -- "The Red Rocket" -- from Toronto's transit system.
As you can imagine, Bonner's return has created quite a buzz among media folks here. In pregame, he submitted to at least half a dozen interviews -- about half a dozen more than the typical pregame for him.
It's been a heck of a back-to-back for Bonner. Yesterday, the Spurs were in Boston to face the Celtics, who Bonner -- a native of New Hampshire -- counts as his hometown team. There are signs Bonner is getting a little too excited about his walk down memory lane.
At one point before tonight's game, he wandered out of the Spurs locker room, began chatting with a familiar face -- then promptly forgot where he had been heading.
"I think my head's going to explode," Bonner told the chuckling media contingent.
At least he didn't commit a gaffe like he did in Boston when, distracted before the game, he almost forgot to have his ankles taped. Bonner had to run back to the locker room just before tip to receive his customary tape job.
Meanwhile, the picture of Bonner posing in front of the Red Rocket station that had been hanging in the Air Canada Centre has been removed. But Bonner is still remembered here. Hanging in the media room is a photo of Bonner in his Spurs silver and black, guarding Andrea Bargnani in the game here last year.
