US customs agents can examine, copy data from searched laptops

    02/11/2008 @ 1:24 pm

Filed by David Edwards and Mike Sheehan

Customs agents have the prerogative to examine and even copy data from travelling citizens' laptops they search, CNN's American Morning reports.

"A new alert for travellers: be careful what you store on your laptop or your BlackBerry when entering the United States," warns CNN's John Roberts. "Customs agents can examine your computer and even keep your private information."

CNN reporter Jeanne Meserve adds ominously, "Your banking records, your music choices, your emails, your business contacts -- all can be examined, copied and stored by the government when you enter the country, if they're in an electronic device."

One Pakistani-American IT consultant says that U.S. agents searched his computer on five occasions upon returning from overseas trips, even forcing him to give them access to confidential corporate information.

    You don't have any rights,
    no privacy,
    no habeas corpus,
no right to a speedy trial,
    no right to legal representation.

    This is new?

Department of Treasury has done an anal exam on my SERVERS a couple of time; as has the DOJ. Don't have warrants or nothing; just regulatory authority - in the normal course of business.

The horror, we are paying closer attention to people traveling to and from countries at the heart of the global war of terror.

Obviously this is a case of big brother out of control [/liberal idiot]

boutons, get the child porn off your computer and you will
have nothing to worry about. Well except the email's of
encouragement you sent to AQ. But just suck it up and
    don't travel.

    Honest question...

Why would the DOJ have interest in "your servers"?

No, thats why I asked my question.
    Couple things;

First I didn't quote you; go look at my post - it was to Boutons; you and I posted at the same time.

Next, DOJ was a typo; should have been DOL.

    My company processes medical claims.

I know you didnt quote me, but I figured re-quoting and asking again would get a response. And it has. Sorry for the miscommunication.

DOL makes more sense. The Labor Department is obviously very interested in the number of Medicare claims made by your company and whether those claims are on the up-and-up.

Or am I approaching that the wrong way?

EDITED: when you said DOJ, I thought you must have been a defense contractor or something. I would have kept my mouth shut if you were, but thats just me. Moot point now.

We are a private company that processes medical claims for private employers who are self-insured. We don't file claims from doctors; we pay claims to doctors.

Just another small step to our glorious police state, along with the Senate voting to let the Telecoms off the hook today.

I've been out of the country with my computer three times now, never had a problem. Somehow, I suspect if I made a trip to Afghanistan or Pakistan or some like that, that would change, and I would understand.

Conveniently one of the three major party candidates who happen to be United States Senators didn't bother to register their vote today...

Hasn't the Clinton campaign been dogging Obama for "present" votes in the Illinois state legislature? I'm glad to see she's willing to make the tough call.

A no-vote? Clearly, she has more "experience" than Obama.

It's amusing when politicians talk about how they're 'fighters' and the importance of 'courage' yet do like that.
