George is able to veto the deal because he's on a one-year contract and would lose his "Early Bird" rights – which allow teams to go over the salary cap to sign him – if he's traded.

"That's a big thing for him as a free agent," Bartelstein said. "We just want to sit down and make sure we're making the right decision for him."
    Then this last night....

Yeah he's really gonna get paid.

Last night notwithstanding, what makes him think the mavs will even consider extending him an offer after he screwed the front office's plans?

True. The only angle I see is that he wants to be dealt somewhere other than New Jersey.

So he can only benefit from early bird rights if the mavs decide to offer him a contract otherwise if he is cut or declines a minimum offer he has no EBRs, correct?

He is an imbecile..same goes for his counsel.

Yeah, that would be amusing to see him let go before the end of the season. I guess he hates the Nets or the greater NYC area that much.

Or working within a sign-and-trade, etc.

Not that there'd be much of a chance of that either...

Maybe the Mavs had second thoughts, or perhaps a buddy on his team who was included in the deal didn't want to go...

    Or Diop.

I think the only one included in the deal that wants it to happen is Stackhouse, and that's because he wouldn't be staying in Jersey. No one wants to willing go there.

Isn't it Ironic. Don't you think. A little too ironic. And I really do think.

There are 2 separate categories. Early Bird and Bird rights (yes both named after Larry).

Early Bird requires 2 consecutive years, and allows contracts up to 175% of previous year's salary with a minimum of 2 year contract.

Bird requires 3 consecutive years and allows up to max contracts.

Non-bird requires 1 day (aka you owned their last contract before it expired) and allows up to 120% increase.

They were talking about it on OTL on ESPN and some guy was saying those rights would be good if someone signed him to about a 5 year deal. I was thinking that there's no way anybody will sign him for that much. Nor will they sign him for the average salaries which they said would be about 5 million and if he got traded he would waive about 8-10 million.

It makes sense except for the fact that George is a scrub and nobody will pay him that money.

George was signed by the Mavericks because of his championship experience, and he signed with the Mavs to have a shot at another ring. I'm not sure why anyone thinks he should just accept a trade to a bad team with no shot at a le just because they value his expiring contract.

I don't know what you mean by "holds no weight", but he damn sure holds all the cards when it comes to this trade. It's doubtful he'll ever have a billionaire by the balls again. Might as well take advantage of it.
