On another note, a lot of people are wringing their hands over the fact that the UN is taking over relief operations and that the coalition that immediately formed and began doing, while the rest of the world talked about doing, is disbanding in deference to UN control.

Take heart in this headline...the victims will more remember the FIRST person to extend their hand, no questions asked, than the bureaucrat that followed up with forms and means tests...just a thought.

Unless, of course, you're the UN and grafting BILLIONS from the aid before you hand it over to a person who never intends to get it to the intended recipients. Then, sometimes, bullets are necessary...

I think you are correct Extra Stout. I have watched them interview some of those people. They seem sincere.

If Iran could ever get around to overthrowing the conservative mullahs, they wouldn't be bad either. Persian-influenced strains of Shi'a espouse a separation of mosque and state, which is very rare in Islam. If you have a modern Indonesia and a modern Iran, then the remaining trouble spots are Pakistan and the Arab world.

If we had a modern Iran, our problem with them wouldn't be terrorism, it would be that they keep outsmarting us in geopolitical positioning for wealth and power in central Asia and around the Indian Ocean. Before the mullahs took over and let it decay, Tehran was sort of an Islamic Los Angeles. Look how much Iranian intelligence runs circles around the CIA already.

Arabs are the biggest problem, because their culture is still so tribal. It would take a long time for them to figure it out on their own, which may be why Bush took such a big risk and intervened directly.

Where is the dip who was posting articles about how Islam is all about killing babies and clubbing baby seals a few months ago?

That statement did not make you look terribly informed.

"Separation of mosque and state" just means they don't believe clerics should actually be running the country, nor that the religious texts be the actual Cons ution, nor that apostasy be a crime. Obviously the principles of Islam would be the underlying framework in determining public policy in even the most "liberal" groups, and they would still regard submission to God and to his laws as the most basic tenets of their society.

What goes as a "liberal" position in Iran is more theocratic than what the Cons ution Party proposes for American government.

There is nothing even remotely approaching the Western secular left-wing idea of excluding religious expression from the public forum. If a political leader tried to implement such a policy over there, he would be killed by an angry mob, then dismembered, have the pieces of his body immersed in pig's blood, and then fed to the dogs.
