HOUSTON -- Within minutes of the Seattle SuperSonics releasing guard Brent Barry Friday, the Houston Rockets were on the phone with Barry's agent, Arn Tellem, offering a two-year deal.
"We are offering the maximum allowed on a two-year contract," said Daryl Morey, Rockets General Manager. "We are in full pursuit."
And not just in the figurative sense. The Rockets are literally going after Barry.
"Coach (Rick) Adelman and I plan to go to San Antonio and meet with Brent," Morey said. "We want to give him the full treatment."
Barry's father, Rick, played for the Rockets during the 1978-1979 season and is a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. His brother, Jon, played for the Rockets for two years and is currently an NBA television analyst.
Brent Barry is a 13-year veteran. Including this season Barry played for the San Antonio Spurs for four years, helping them to two NBA les. He was traded to Seattle Wednesday in the deal that sent Kurt Thomas to the Spurs. He was included to make the deal work financially and was released 48 hours later.
The Spurs would like to re-sign him. The Phoenix Suns, L.A. Lakers, and Boston Celtics have also expressed interest.
"We think Brent can be a key piece in our playoff run if we can get him," Morey said. "We think he can help us in a significant way."
The first day Barry can sign with any team is Tuesday.

I mean wtf, he camps out at the arc and drains..........wtf.
Basically they are saying "we want you to play for us, but we don't want to pay you what's left on your contract. instead we'll pay you less" the vet min.
"We'll pay you the most of the least amount possible!"
The Suns will pay $1 more than whatever the Rockets offer. And 70 virgins.
Screw Brent, I'll take the offer.![]()

Barry will go to a contender (i.e. Spurs or Boston), not a wannabee like Houston.
Spurs to Rockets: "We basically gave you Scola we did a great favor for you guys. Now it's your turn to return it. Pretend you are going hard after Barry. Then act as though you've decide to not follow through with the deal. We'll be waiting with open arms for Barry."
