I'm looking for a family pet that is smart, protective, and good with kids. I've heard mostly good things about them. Any advice would be appreciated.

GET a pittbull and become a statistic one day
My cousin has a basset. Good dog, but he barks constantly.
Hip Dysplasia is something that is common in German Sheperds (well maybe not just them). Maybe it's not just them but yeah... it's something you have to think about. I had a German Shepherd a few years ago and she had that later in her life![]()
No thanks. Their temper is about as predictable as texas weather
Other than that, how was she?
I've got a German Shepherd and he's super sweet. He loves to play with cats and is very protective of me. He hates anyone but me though (I live alone) so I can't give advice on the kids part. Very smart dogs too ( mine's not but I've had others that were).
Great dog! Loved her to death. The only thing I really don't know about is how they're around with kids. I was already a teenager and so were my sisters and there really wasn't any kids around her so I couldn't tell you. But she was really protective of us and the whole family. Hope you have a big backyard if you're planning to get one![]()
Exactly, same thing with me. If anyone who wasn't a regular part of the family came to our house, we had to lock our dog in the back. My German Shepherd hated everyone else and protected our family like I said before.
I have two kids. One is 13 and the other is 4. It's the 4yr old I'm more concerned with. As far as a backyard goes, it's fairly large.
Did you get him when he was a pup?
Yes I had his mother when she was a pup and he's been with me 9 years now, she passed away almost 2 years ago
Mine haven't had any hip problems but I heard that is common.
We had a male lab/shep. mix. Kids were 7,8,& 9. Best dog in the world. Super smart, protective, & great gaurd dog. Lived to be l7 years old. Mix is the way to go, IMO. Don't muchtrust full breeds, too much in breading =![]()
Full bread German Shep will bite your 4 year old's face off!
Thanks. I'll keep that in mind.
Mine is part lab also. I also prefer mutts, they make better pets.
I always wanted a shepherd but I heard too many hip dysplasia stories; my friend has a young (3yrs) female that already has it. Hers is pure shepherd, I don't know if that is a factor. So I ended up with a Doberman and he's precious. LOVES kids, adults, dogs, cats, etc. Very protective of me and the kids--if I get a little too "emphatic" when dealing with the kids, he will jump in the middle and bark. He was an absolute livewire when he was a pup, and now he is 5, but still has a real playful, pup personality. Smart as can be and really easy to train!
Too bad you can't train him to bring in your garbage cans on a windy day, instead of your 85 year old neighbor![]()

Now that you mentioned it the old dude WAS a little easier to train!![]()
Flash a little cleavage, and they will follow you anywhere, ,................................................. .................or take in your cans![]()
Wiemeriner . Very loyal , protective but not unsocialable , great with kids , easily trained and downright beautiful dogs. I recomend a male. The one draw back when it comes to wiemeriners is that they're kinda nutty. And from my experience the males are more even tempered. Plus they can get just as big as a GS, mine is 130 and not overweight at all . He's a fine specimen, gentle giant and i love wrestling with him knowing i cant really hurt him. Noah is his name
Get a Caucasian Ovcharka Mountain Dog. This thing will kill just about anything other than you and your kids.

That's why they score highest on the standardized tempermant test.....................![]()
I love German Shepards, but if I had small kids, I would not trust them.
