Barry's Dad Wants Brent To Sign With Suns
    February 27th, 2008 @ 6:51pm by James Schmehl/Sports 620 KTAR

If Hall of Fame forward Rick Barry had to choose where his son would finish his career, he said it would be an easy decision.

"Playing the Mike D'Antoni style would be so conducive for him," Barry told Sports 620 KTAR.

Rick, who is in town to participate in the Kyle Petty's Victory Invitational Celebrity Golf Tournament, said his son, free-agent sharpshooter Brent Barry, is still undecided as to which team he will sign with, but has limited his choices to Phoenix and San Antonio.

"I would love to see him play for the Suns," Barry said. "It would be the first time that he would play on a team where he could showcase his talent."

All-Stars Shaquille O'Neal, Steve Nash and close friend Sean Marks have each called Brent in an attempt to lure the 36-year-old guard to Phoenix.

"They (Barry's family) really seem to love it there (San Antonio)," Brent's father said. "It's all going to come down to what his wife (Erin) wants to do."

Brent met with his family on Tuesday in San Antonio to discuss his future, followed by a meeting with Suns GM Steve Kerr, who flew to San Antonio on Tuesday in the middle of a scouting trip.

"From the stand point of just having fun playing the game, it certainly would be more fun playing here (in Phoenix)," Rick said.

Rick said Brent would compliment D'Antoni's offensive system by opening up the floor, which would take pressure off newly acquired center Shaquille O'Neal.

"He and Barbosa, coming off the bench, would be awesome," Berry said.

The Suns and the Spurs are not expected to give more than a prorated portion of the veterans' minimum ($1.2 million) to Barry, but Phoenix and San Antonio have reportedly offered the 3-point specialist two-year deals.

Rick said his son would be an enormous addition to the Suns' fast-paced tempo.

"He's also going to help them with their running game," Barry said "My son can pass the out of the basketball. I'm just hoping he hasn't forgotten how to do it because it's been so long since they gave him a chance to do it."

The Suns expected to hear from Barry late Tuesday regarding his decision, but Barry, who has played with the Spurs for three years and has family living in San Antonio, has waited on his decision.

"I would love to see this happen and hope that he has the chance to showcase the other talents that he has," Barry said. "If he's given that opportunity and made the decision to come here, people will see elements of his game that people really aren't aware of."

Barry, who hasn't played since Jan. 24 due to a calf injury, is averaging 7.3 points this season on 43 percent shooting from 3-point range.

"He can shoot the three, obviously, and he's also a terrific free throw shooter," Berry said.

I hope Brent doesn't listen to his Dad

Does it not irritate anyone else that the author goes back and forth calling him Barry and then Berry?

Either Rick Barry is playing along or he is being his usual bag self! His own sons can't even stand him! The last thing Brent would do is take career advice from his sorry ass dad!

"He's also going to help them with their running game," Barry said "My son can pass the out of the basketball. Well... one of them can, anyway. And I think it's Brent, and not that other one that spells his first name funny. Brent's the younger one, right?"

Suns hit 50% of their 18 3-point shot attempts, gave up 120 points, and lost by 17 at New Orleans tonight. Clearly Brent Barry will put them over the top.

Only gravity can take pressure off Shaq. Throwing another sharpshooter on the court isn't going to make a damn bit of difference.

Was he referring to Walter BERRY. It seems as if Rick Barry has always dissed the Spurs. Does anyone remember when Rick Barry said that he didn't think that David Robinson would ever sign with the Spurs before he was drafted? Maybe Ricks hair plugs in the front of his head are the problem.

Brent Barry is more of an open court run and gun style player and would be a better fit in the suns system. I've heard Rick Barry before say his son is not utilized to the best of his talents because of the teams he has played on.
