Barry narrows options to Spurs or Suns

Another day came and went with no indication about Brent Barry's immediate basketball future.
Barry, waived by Seattle after the Spurs traded him to the SuperSonics as part of the package that brought Kurt Thomas to San Antonio, reportedly will either re-sign with the Spurs or join the Phoenix Suns, a team he twice helped the Spurs defeat in playoff series en route to two NBA championships.
The 36-year-old guard told the Express-News on Tuesday that he hoped to have a decision made by Wednesday evening. He did not return phone calls Wednesday.
Pursued by the Spurs, Suns, Houston Rockets and Boston Celtics, Barry told a Houston TV station on Wednesday that he had eliminated the Rockets from consideration for his services. He cited the injury to Houston's 7-foot-6 All-Star center Yao Ming as the primary factor in that decision.
Suns general manager Steve Kerr, like Barry a former Spurs shooting specialist, on Monday visited Barry at his home but left without a commitment. Kerr told the Arizona Republic that Barry had narrowed his choices to the Suns and Spurs.
The Spurs finally acknowledged their interest in returning Barry to their roster, though NBA rules mandate that they wait until March 21 to do so.
“We've expressed our interest to Brent about wanting to bring him back,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said after Wednesday's practice session.
So have many of Barry's teammates.
Asked if he had reached out to Barry, Tony Parker responded emphatically.
“Of course,” Parker said, “of course, of course. I have no idea (what he is going to do), but I hope he'll be back.”
Barry's 43 percent 3-point percentage this season made him the Spurs' best long-distance shooter.

He "hoped" to have a decision Wednesday evening.
We wait it out...
Thanks timvp.
Sounds like the Express-News was waiting on the 8PM deadline, too.he hoped to have a decision made by Wednesday evening. He did not return phone calls Wednesday.
How hard could it be to pick between the Spurs and the Suns? Either you want to remain with your teammates and try to win a championship or you want to put up pretty stats.
Pick.
Thanks.
He sure is milking this fake "I'm not coming back to the Spurs" thing out long enough. I think Stern is looking the other way already. Go ahead and commit to the Spurs.
I guess we are all a little in the dark, here and this article pretty much fails.
Eh, just end the drama already.
That picture is wrong on so many levels Solid D![]()
I couldnt have said it better myself, so I wont. But I agree.
He's a 36 year old shooting guard who's coming off a calf injury. A nice player to have in your system? Sure. Preferable to have him back over trying to find some D-leaguer to replace him? Sure. Irreplaceable? No. Necessary? No.
If he opts to join the Suns, it's been fun. If he opts to come back, welcome.
But neither outcome is that significant.
The Spurs have made Brent sweat out enough deadlines the last few years. Maybe he's just letting 'em know how it feels.![]()
Solid D has been on a roll lately with the pics. He's taking on a new role, a vilain role like the spurs last year.
Man Brent is in early 2006 season form where he was hesitating on almost every shot which nearly got him traded that season. I don't like that BrentI want the decisive Brent back, but I DO NOT want anything to do with the hesitating Brent Barry. Make you decision Brent and PLEASE come back.
Barry continues to mull decision

NEW ORLEANS - The Suns got another phone call and some more text messages Wednesday from free-agent guard Brent Barry but still no decision.
Barry told teams he would have a decision Tuesday. He has remained torn between the opportunity of a significant playing role in Phoenix and his emotional attachment to San Antonio, where he has played since 2004, winning two les and establishing a family home.
Both teams are offering a veteran's minimum contract for the remainder of this season and next season, but San Antonio is believed to be adding a partial guarantee for the 2009-10 season as well.
Barry's teammates must have a strong pull, because he was not pleased about being traded, especially after being told once before that he was dealt to New Orleans for J.R. Smith. His role in San Antonio would be diminished with the addition of Damon Stoudamire and the recent play of Ime Udoka.
In Phoenix, Barry would be counted on to spread the offense with his shooting and run the floor as a wing or backup point guard.
"From the standpoint of just playing, having fun playing the game, it certainly would be more fun playing (for Phoenix)," his father, Rick, told KTAR-AM on Wednesday. "Playing in Mike D'Antoni's style would be so conducive for him. He and (Leandro) Barbosa coming off the bench would be awesome. He can shoot the 3, obviously. He's a terrific 3-point shooter. He would spread the floor and make it tough to (collapse) in on Shaq (Shaquille O'Neal)."
Phoenix has a Plan B. Philadelphia is expected to buy out 6-foot-6 shooter Gordan Giricek so that he can join the Suns if Barry does not pick Phoenix.

I'm starting to be convinced that Barry really is torn. He likes his teammates but he sees more opportunities for himself in Phoenix. I used to think that he was just making sure he didn't Stackhouse himself but I now don't think that's a possibility.
In fact, it appears as if he's leaning toward the Suns. Although he might be tempted to stay just on friendships alone, even if he sees a diminished role and a system he wouldn't enjoy as much.
Well, at least there is an end in sight. Giricek would have to be waived either on Thursday or Friday to be eligible for the playoffs ... meaning Barry can't string this out much longer.Phoenix has a Plan B. Do you think the Spurs offering Brent Barry a three year deal is a good idea though?
Just go to Phoenix already Barry.
Winning rings is obviously not number 1 on your list...
Eh, not bad. The Spurs likely won't be near the luxury tax threshold for either of the next two years. Having a minimum contract on the books wouldn't affect much.
However, to me if Barry really wants to go that bad, let him go. If he doesn't want to try to win a championship in San Antonio and would rather do so in Phoenix, that's his decision.
It would just make beating the Suns that much sweeter![]()
I agree...Thanks for answering my question.![]()

The guy has the right to think about what's better for him and his family.
Entertaining the idea of winning a ring sitting on the bench when you already have two isn't that appealing. There is more in real life than frendship and minor roles, especially in the NBA.
He should take his time, and whatever decision he makes, we'll thank him for what he did for the spurs.
Starting to diss and kiss him goodbye right now because he's taking his time is narrow minded.
Too bad Barry can't sign with the Mavs. whottt would be in heaven.
