    from http://www.geoffmetcalf.com/aus.html:

    OBSERVABLE FACT, AFTER 12 MONTHS OF DATA:

    * Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2%
    * Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6%
    * Australia-wide, armed-robberies are up 44% (yes, FORTY-FOUR PERCENT)
    * In the state of Victoria, homicides-with-firearms are up 300%
    * Figures over the previous 25 years show a steady decrease in homicides-with-firearms (changed dramatically in the past 12 months)
    * Figures over the previous 25 years show a steady decrease in armed-robbery-with-firearms (changed dramatically in the past 12 months)
    * There has been a dramatic increase in breakins-and-assaults-of- the-elderly
    * At the time of the ban, the Prime Minister said "self-defense is not a reason for owning a firearm"
    * From 1910 to present, homicides in Australia had averaged about 1.8-per-100,000 or lower, a safe society by any standard.
    * The ban has destroyed Australia's standings in some international sport shooting compe ions
    * The membership of the Australian Sports Shooting Association has risen to 112,000, a 200% increase, in response to the ban and as an attempt to organize against further controls, which are expected.
    * Australian politicians are on the spot and at a loss to explain how no improvement in "safety" has been observed after such monumental effort and expense was successfully expended in "ridding society of guns". Their response has been to "wait longer".

    You can not take the firearms out of law abiding civilians hands until you take them out of criminals hands first. I'm more concerned about safety and marksmanship course requirements (including upkeep courses) and instilling responsibility for actions taken with the firearm (even if the firearm is not used by the owner).

    Where is the data that says fire arms in law abiding citizens hands have been responsible as a deterrent to prevent crime.

    Really how often does a gun owner prevent a violent crime because he was allowed to have a gun?

    You want the old west where everyone was packing a firearm and took it upon themselves to use it or not?

    How do you quantify how many crimes don't get committed because the criminal decides he doesn't want to take the chance of getting shot?

    America has a gun fetish. Irrespective of right or left, red or blue, conservatives and liberals, Yoni or mookie .

    Pathetic.

    Or see that "this residence is monitored by ADT" sticker on the window and decides he doesn't want to take the chance of getting caught.

    Crime in the UK has dramatically risen as well. However Canadas crime rate still remains very low in regards to gun violence.

    Regarding gun crime in Florida, ever since they started making it fairly easy for a non felon to get a ccw permit, gun related crimes has dropped dramatically. you can carry a gun loaded in your glovebox in florida legally without a ccw as long as it is three steps away from use.

    Yes, also difficult to quantify. Thank you for contributing.

    You get any news from Mexico? They have some of the
    toughest laws anywhere on gun control. Well except for
    the dopers. You know that is the place where they kill
    people they don't like.

    In Switzerland all males are part of the Army there and required to own firearms. They have basically no violent gun-related crimes. The key for them? They require ownership of the firearms prior to males having them in their possession.

    Seems to work out okay for them....

    I have no problem with that.

    Problem is in the US anybody can get a gun. It so easy it is ridiculous. You can get it thought the mail.

    Given the number of gun-related crimes in the US, it seems it is not working at all . . .

    Err, sorry, that should have said that Switzerland requires registration of the firearms prior to issuance.

    And actually the number of gun-related crimes are higher in the places with firearm bans and no concealed carry laws here in the U.S.

    As one of my buddies (CHL instructor) likes to say: 'people are a lot less likely to try if they think there's a chance someone's going to be shooting back.'

    Still, there are studies that show crime is down when law abiding citizens own firearms.

    if you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns (and the government)
    That's redundant.
