Pistons coaches blamed in brawl
In police report, the Pacers' Carlisle and his players also criticize lax security

AUBURN HILLS -- Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle blamed Detroit Pistons coaches and lax security for the Nov. 19 brawl at the Palace, according to an 871-page police report of the incident obtained by The Detroit News.

"I think Detroit is very understaffed security wise, having been there for two years," Carlisle said in a Nov. 20 statement to an NBA security official. "This whole thing could have been prevented but the Detroit coaching staff did not get involved. They did not properly remove (Pistons forward) Ben (Wallace) from the floor. Ben threw his towel and that was the cue to start throwing things at Ron (Artest)."
Although Carlisle has publicly avoided criticizing the Pistons organization, for which he was head coach from 2001-03, his comments were among more than 60 statements by players, team officials and announcers included in the Auburn Hills police report. The report -- which has not been released publicly by police -- provides insight into the chaos surrounding one of the ugliest brawls in sports history.
Even leaving The Palace of Auburn Hills was a test for the Pacers, according to team trainer David Craig.
"The police escort we received in Detroit was the worst I have ever seen," Craig told NBA security. "Cars were cutting in between us, and anyone could have taken a potshot at us."
David Harrison, a Pacers player, told NBA security: "On the bus out of there, they told us to keep our heads down."
The NBA has not notified the Pistons of Carlisle's comments or concerns, said team spokesman Matt Dobek. He said that Carlisle never complained about security when he was the Pistons head coach.
"He never made that statement when he was here," said Dobek, who added that it was unfair to judge the team on a single incident.
Dobek was concerned on the night of the brawl, however.
"I was afraid someone might be killed," he told the NBA the next day. Dobek said Friday that he no longer feels that the situation was such a threat.
The Palace now has added more uniformed police near team benches.

Weak ass . He might have a case if the fans came onto the floor first to start the altercation, but it still all comes down to his dumbass players doing the inexcusable: going into the stands after fans. That is just non-spinnable, and he looks stupid to try.
Back in 67, I remember they told us the same thing when my High School, Martin from Laredo, played Harlandale, we had rocked them in Laredo the year before, and when we came here it was payback, and we did get rocked. I'm shocked that can still happen in this day and age. No, I'm just kidding, I'm shocked that these players would think that anyone the police included could protect them from crazy people.
I thought the Pacers were showing toughness but they chocked against Spurs then layed down vs. both Dallas and Suns.
Had them making a run to get out of East but now that is doubtful, but then again, Miami did not look so great tonight either. Who knows in that again sorry ass conference?

Uh, it wasn't the players that needed protection from the fans. Vice versa. I don't recall any players getting clocked. The worst thing I saw was Artest had his jersey stretched, and it was probably one of his teammates that did it, trying to stop him from pounding fans. Detroit security is not responsible to keep Indiana players from doing the stupid.No, I'm just kidding, I'm shocked that these players would think that anyone the police included could protect them from crazy people.
Your thug in a game that was decided pushed the other teams best player than backed down (only good move).

It has been noted many times that the security in the arena was sub-par. Player Union rep Billy Hunter even noted that, saying that this incident would have never happened in The Garden, or Staples Center.
And the Pistons coaches should definitely have intervened with the Ben Wallace situation. But most of all, Ron Artest, and the fans were to blame for that incident.
I still wanna know how Carlisle and Larry Bird have completely escaped any blame.
If Isiah was still there and this had happened, he would have gotten roasted by the national media and a bunch of people on this site for not having enough "discipline".

I don't think they have either of those in the Garden, or at Staples. , out in LA you have fans sitting next to the opposing team's coach.
This is a dumb take, almost as dumb as Carlisle's attempt at deflecting blame.

It wouldn't have happened in the Forum because the celebrities are too afraid of spilling their Latte to get in a brawl.
Billy Hunter would blame the Popcorn guy before he would blame players. Why, because it's HIS JOB. The fight never would have involved fans if Artest didn't go into the stands.
Does any other Spurs fans remember a game @ Denver where the crowd started throwing things on the court and at the players? This was a few years back. The Spurs just waited it out and after a delay they played out the game. No one charged the stands or punched a fan. That's how things should be handled.
I expect Carlisle's comments are for "domestic (Pacers) consumption" ie, he wants to let his own team know that he is more on Hunter's side, than not. That will reap him more benefits with his team, than taking the other side.
You're a dumbass if you can't recognize Billy Hunter for what he is - an excuse monger for the players.

Anyone who screams that they are right because player PR lackey Billy Hunter says so is, well, wrong.
