    Spurs notebook: Ginobili replays history

The play lacked the drama attendant with an NBA Finals game that produces a championship, but Spurs guard Manu Ginobili acknowledged that his steal from New Jersey's Richard Jefferson with 1:02 remaining in the third quarter of the Spurs' 81-70 victory over the Nets on Tuesday at the AT&T Center left him with a feeling of déjà vu.
The defensive gem was nearly identical to one Ginobili made early in the fourth quarter of Game 6 of the 2003 NBA Finals. Then, with the Spurs trailing by eight points, Ginobili tipped the ball away from Jefferson. When Jefferson turned to recover the ball, he didn't see that Ginobili was circling, coming from the other side. Ginobili got the ball and turned it into a dunk, starting a rally that ended with the Spurs celebrating their second le.

His action in Tuesday's game was eerily similar.

"Yes," he said, "I thought about the same thing, because it was very similar. That one was in the middle of the court; this one was on the side, but it was very similar."

Tuesday's play lacked the urgency — the Spurs, not the Nets, led by eight at the moment of the steal — but Ginobili had a flashback, just the same.

He is not apt to remember Tuesday night's play quite as distinctly.

"You are probably going to forget about a Game (59) play like that, but a Game 6 of the Finals, you remember," he said.

Streaking: The Spurs' 10-game win streak is their longest since they reeled off 13 in a row last season, from Feb. 13 through March 13.

The difference this season: The streak hasn't given them much separation in the Western Conference, which remains airtight. The Spurs remain in a virtual tie for first in the conference with the Los Angeles Lakers, who also won Tuesday to run their record to 43-18.

So crazy is the race that even the politically aware Gregg Popovich turned off coverage of Tuesday's primary elections on his drive to the arena to tune in to a sports station.

"That's strange for me," he said, "but I was just clicking and clicking, and (Utah forward Carlos) Boozer was on there, and he said it was the strangest feeling: 'We're 3 1/2 games out of first and 2 1/2 from being out of the playoffs.'"

In such a scenario, said Popovich, "every game is a monster."

Does anyone think that the reason why Manu went back to the bench in the other NJ game was because it was a back to back game? So Pop wanted to limit his minutes a bit...he had 29 minutes for that game. And in yesterday's game, he went right back to being a starter and had about 33 minutes.

Or maybe Pop is still not sure if to keep starting Manu or have him back on the bench? Maybe, he's also paying attention to how Finley is playing...whether he's playing better as a starter or on the bench?
