I predicted McCain Leiberman in the "Now that its the New Year" thread.

Don't think it will happen now, however (although it could).

Oh yeah, because that'll convince the evangelicals to come out and vote for McCain - sign up the Jew.

Oh yeah, because that'll convince the fiscal conservatives to sign up for McCain - sign up the former Democrat.

I'm sure McCain wishes he was as much a shoo in as some of you seem to think he is...

evangelicals are a very small part of the electorate (see romney, huckabee)

being a democrat is one thing. taxing the out people is another (see obama, clinton)

Evangelicals now make up a full 30% of the Republican party. And it's rising. It's really not clear whether a Republican can win without their support - they are the reason Bush won and we haven't had a candidate who didn't pander to them since.

    You think they won't vote?

They will; and they'll vote for McCain - the ongoing Dem primary will help see to that; as the candidates slide further, and further AND further to the left to secure the nomination.

I'll see your backing out of NAFTA, and all raise you, well, oh .....death penalty for corporate profits (Boutons pees his pants)!!!!

People NEVER vote for the Vice President, because they never do anything...so why does it matter who he picks?

And don't bring up McCain's age. I think that'll get much more play in media than it will in the minds of people who go to vote.

    My prediction....

In a typical "Maverick McCain" move, he doesn't go with the candidate who solidifies the conservative base, or the popular swing-state Republican....he goes with the guy who he trusts most to handle the primary job of president; to protect the American people.

Who that is exactly? I'm not sure...but given his close relationship with Liebermann, and Liebermann's strong stance on the war, I wouldn't rule him out.

Cheney broke the mold on that conventional thinking.

I agree with this, but regarding VP: I think the VP choice certainly didn't help Bush Sr. - and probably did affect some votes.

This strikes me as odd. If you just go by their votes on the issues, Obama could not be more different from McCain AND Lieberman. Lieberman is socially progressive (Little known fact: He is one of the ONLY past Dem candidates to openly support gay marriage, despite being an Orthodox Jew and opposing gay marriage within the frame of his own religion) but on most other issues, he consistently votes with the Republicans: economic, foreign policy, etc. So in what ways do you see McCain/Lieberman AND Obama as being representative of your beliefs or issues?

Meanwhile, I would not be surprised if McCain selects Huckabee to be his running mate. They are reportedly good friends, and this might help him bring in the evangelicals. On the other hand, I have heard speculation about him looking to Romney as well, to try and bring in another wing of the Republicans who don't seem to trust McCain.
